Internet connection - can't find DNS any more
I'm cleaning up a friend's Toshiba laptop which had been infested by spyware,
adware, keyloggers and trojans. After it was cleaned, I created a Dial Up connection with the 56K internal modem, and connected to my ISP OK, with full Internet and POP e-mail access. The machine seemed clean and useable with correct acces to the Inernet. However the machine has not been kept up to date with Windows updates, and the 56K modem would never have been a viable option to process all outstanding Windows updates. I installed a USB Wifi connection so I could connect the laptop to my broadband connection through my network router, and downloaded and installed about 60 MB of Windows updates. When I then tried connecting the machine through the Dial Up internal 56K modem (to be sure all was still working OK) it connects to the ISP but it can no longer find any sites. I have not made any changes to the DUN or TCP settings - so I can't see why it won't find any site names - it was working OK before the update. The ISP provides a valid IP address - Winipcfg looks normal, and the DNS names displayed are as expected. Unfortunately, the machine is installed with the Swedish language (which I can barely understand), and I am concerned I may have done something stupid during the update, because of the language difficulty. I think TCP is OK as it connects to my network using the USB Wifi. However, I can't ping my ISP's DNS server. I tried that last night, plusa similar one from Adware. No joy with either. Problem remains. I tried reconnecting through the Wifi and that still works. I presume the DNS is being picked up through the router and its DNS linkage, but the recognition of DNS through the standard Dial Up modem still doesn't work. I can ping localhost and 127.0.0.1 OK. I tried pinging one of the redirected sites located in the HOSTS files, and that returned 127.0.0.1 OK. So, it seems that TCP/IP is OK? I'd hate to have to reinstall TCP (because of the Swedish language problem - I can't see what I am doing!). There is a Winsock.dll, dated about 2001. I'm completely stumped - desperate for suggestions. Check to see whether there's a proxy server in use - it may not be required.

OK, I'll check that out tonight. There probably is a proxy server set, as I
usually use the ISP's proxy. I can't see, though, if that is the problem, why it worked before I installed the Windows updates and then failed to work afterwards. Updates can sometimes have the effect of toggling such options

Noel - checked the proxy settings - all browsers (IExploer, Firefox,
Netscape) are set to direct connection to Internet. Checked the settings from Internet Options in Control Panel - also no proxy set. Disabled Norton and switched off the firewall, as a check. Still no joy :-( What else? Try also this Winsock fix: http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip Download, unzip, scan and reboot when finished. See if that helps. I have not made any changes to the DUN or TCP settings - so I can't see why it won't find any site names - it was working OK before the update. The ISP provides a valid IP address - Winipcfg looks normal, and the DNS names displayed are as expected. Unfortunately, the machine is installed with the Swedish language (which I can barely understand), and I am concerned I may have done something stupid during the update, because of the language difficulty. I think TCP is OK as it connects to my network using the USB Wifi. However, I can't ping my ISP's DNS server. Does anyone have any idea what may be the problem and what I need to do to fix it? thanks GB |

Tried the Winsockfix - no joy.
Deleted and reinstalled TCP - no joy. I can still access the Internet via the USB Wifi, but not via the 56K modem. Looks like a re-install :-(( sigh! Thanks guys for the help, though. I presume the DNS is being picked up through the router and its DNS linkage, but the recognition of DNS through the standard Dial Up modem still doesn't work. I can ping localhost and 127.0.0.1 OK. I tried pinging one of the redirected sites located in the HOSTS files, and that returned 127.0.0.1 OK. So, it seems that TCP/IP is OK?
