Office XP trashed my Windows 98

I just installed and activated MS Office XP on my Windows 98 SE machine.

It has created all sorts of problems. Slow, sometimes not
booting, Lexmark printer software crashing, etc. So bad
I'm considering de-installing it.

(1) Do you think adding more memory would help? (it has 128mb now, I
could pop in another 128mb I have easily.)
(2) Could it be that it's conflicting with the Printer Driver (Lexmark
z11, el cheapo)?
(3) Could it be that it's conflicting with the Office 97 I left on the
PC?

Any help would be appreciated -- I'm getting desperate, and seriously
considering de-installing it and going back to Office 97! --Peter

P.S.
I have read the MSKB articles:
--"HOWTO: Install Windows 98 to a New Folder to Troubleshoot Problems in
Office XP": it seems far too difficult and risky to do!
--"How to troubleshoot performance issues in Windows XP:" did all these
things, appears not to work.

I have also posted almost the same message on "
microsoft.public.office.setup"
