Windows 98 & ME - CD Drive

A while back I was trying to play a CD on my computer and
it wouldn't play. I didn't really try to do anything with
it. Today I was looking in the My Computer folder and both
of my CD drives are missing. Does anyone know what might
have happened? Thanks oin advance for any help.

Well I'm having the same problem and have gotten some
advice from people on here but still haven't found a
solution yet. I will let you know if I get my CD-ROM
Drive working and can you do the same if you get yours
working. For some reason after I installed WindowsME I
don't have my CD-DRive listed or able to work anymore
either.

Try this

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL CD-ROM devices
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch - if present
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall required drivers.

See if that helps

I tried doing what you said and nothing happened. The
drives still aren't present in the my computer and I can't
access anything through the cd drives. When I rebooted in
safe mode, there weren't any flagged devices. But in
normal mode, I have my "Secondary IDE Controller (dual
fife)" flagged. I'm not sure exactly what this does but
when I try to find the best drivers for it, all I can get
is the one that is already installed. I don't want to mess
anything up on my computer so any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

I don't know if that could help you or not, but I've had
ME since I got the computer and it just started doing this
within the past 2 or so months. We've owned the computer
for a few years now and it has never done this before.
I'll be sure to let you know if I fix the problem though.

Your CD-ROM is connected to your secondary controller and until that is
recognised by Win Me you will not be able to use devices connected to that
controller. Boot Again to Safe Mode and try deleting your Master IDE
controller and its primary and secondary controllers. Reboot back into Normal
Mode and let Win Me detect your hardware and hopefully this time correctly
install the drivers

Hi Mike,

I tried your advice and was only able to remove my master
IDE I was unable to remove my primary and secondary it
said something about it was shared and was unable to
remove. But I did remove my master and restarted in
WindowsME but it detected my master but still can not get
my CD-ROM detected. Do you think this problem is
something I am going to have to take and be fixed? I have
tried the advice you, others and microsoft website has
given me and still for some reason cannot get WindowsME to
recognize my CD-ROM. Do you have any other advice that
may be able to help me. I hate to have to spend a fortune
getting it fixed by someone.

I tried doing what you told me to do, but I got the same
message as Shelly. I can't delete the primary and
secondary IDE's, just the master one. Also, it gives me a
code 10 as the reason for my secondary IDE to not be
working. Just a quick question, should I be able to see
the option for a CD-ROM on my device manager in normal
mode? I did in safe mode but not in normal. Thanks again,
it's nice to know someone cares.

Your problem isn't your CD-ROM, that's the result of the
problem. The actual
problem is that your secondary IDE controller doesn't
seem to want to install
correctly. As to why I haven't sufficient information to
hazard a guess.
