DVD is a local drive not a cd drive

Within the past two weeks, my dvd drive has changed it self
to a local drive and I can not use it anymore for playing
or loading software. I have gone through the messages and
have tried everything that was mentioned to do, but nothing
seems to work. Any help would be great. This is a great
site!!

Try this
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL CD/DVD drives
Remove ALL HDs
Remove the Master IDE Controller

Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers (may
take a couple of reboots)

See if that cures it.

Noel,
Thanks, but this did not work. It only took one boot to
have the drivers reinstalled and when I removed the master
IDE controller, it left the primary and secondary
controllers there. Is this a problem?

Nope - that's normal.
In Device Manager, open the Properties page for the DVD - what does it say?
