SCM Smart Card
 

I have an SCM Smart Card from 1996 which runs under DOS and Win3.1.

On Win98 (dual boot) it found the card reader and I installed it.

It knows when the card is removed and the card reader itself beeps
when w98 comes up. But it does not create any drive letter for using
the PCMCIA card. I use it so infrequently that I just wait until I'm
in DOS, but it is annoying.

We cannot expect Win98 to manage pre-98 devices
(e.g. to display your Smart Card as a pseudodrive) unless
a device driver is loaded to enable this. There are a few
"generic" USB freeware drivers that may reward experiment.

Is the PCMCIA controller installed as a W98 device? If it's not, that's
where you need to start. Check the specifications for your machine and find
the drivers for W98 from the manufacturer. There are probably only two
options for a machine of that era.

Alternatively, load the PCMCIA drivers that you are using in the DOS boot
from the W98 CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT - that should give you access to
the card as a DOS device (although it might require the card to be inserted
at boot time in order to get a drive letter).

Note that this query has nothing to do with USB and the generic USB drivers
are not going to help..

Many thanks. I have to dig up the disks from SCM.

I was really surprised when W98 knew what SCM was.

The Drivers I have under DOS and Win3 have to swapped in and out of
the config.sys file, because of device conflicts, which meant I
sreaded to use them.

I think I found the problem: IRQ conflict.
Not sure. Working on it. Not sure i know how to fix.

You will probably fix an IRQ conflict by using a parameter in the driver
line in config.sys for one of the devices, that forces it to a different
IRQ. But if that option doesn't exist it may be difficult.

If you don't need it, disable it in BIOS and maybe the IRQ that is released
can be used when installing the other devices. If you want to get it
working you'll need to provide more details.

Well, the thing that got me playing with the SCM setting was that I
could not get my PC to talk to my Palm Pilot (never, for four years).
I found out it was because it was COM1 not COM2. Meanwhile I
unsinstalled the SCM PCMCIA from W98 and it killed my modem (COM4) as
well. So I then reinstalled SCM, PCMCIA (one device, three windows
settings) ***AND*** my modem to baisc config 0 then "auto config" and
the modem came back. I also found the SCM software disk that came with
the drive and it used SystemSoft CardSoft 3.1 ca 1994. So I'm ahead
on the palm pilot, not sure on the camera (how do I change port on
DSC1000?), even on the modem, even on SCM, and one step back in that
NetZero says it is corrupted. (I had this problem once before and know
it is usually setting, not corrution.)
