Boot From USB Harddisk

Hi!

My CD Rom is not working and i don't have floppy in my Laptop. I have
window98 CD and a desktop computer with windows xp on it. I have removed the
harddisk of my laptop and connected to the desktop. How can i transfer
system files on the first partition of the external harddisk from windows 98
CD so that i can boot from the harddisk directly?

Thanks!

Your post is not clear. What are you attempting to do--copy the setup files
from the W98 CD to your laptop hard drive so that you can put the drive back
in the laptop and install W98? If this is the case, do you want to do a
clean install (format the drive) or install over the top of an existing
system?

Disconnect the harddrive from the desktop
and with just the laptop's HD connected...

Boot up with a cd support floppy and copy your win98 folder to the HD

also from the A: drive

issue the command sys C:

that should transfer the system files to make the drive bootable in the
laptop...
then when the drive is back in the laptop, it should boot .
You can then run setup from within the win98 folder

Note: if your desktop does not have a floppy, the win98 cd may be bootable

Because the drive is mounted in a USB enclosure that is unlikely to
work. The OP can try the Motto Hairu (AKA Panasonic) DOS USB drivers
and see if they will allow him to prepare the disk from a DOS session.
Or he can get a 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch IDE Adapter and stick the disk on
the IDE controller in his desktop, these adapters can be bought for a
couple of dollars.

Maybe I should have read where he said "USB Harddisk" .

Anyway the adaptor is the way to go...and they only cost a couple of bucks!
