HELP!!!! Win98 Internet Connection Probs
Hi everyone,
I hope this is the right forum for this question, because I can't seem to unearth anything in the MS knowledge databse that helps. I am tearing my hair out trying to get my girlfriend's internet connection working. She's running an older HP (not sure which exact model) with windows 98. She is trying to connect through her apartment complex's internet connection via an ethernet card. Being cautious, I installed the latest Zone Alarm (5.something) before I plugged in the box. All i get with IE are DNS errors. I twiddled around with the settings a little bit, and got nowhere. Later that week, the guy that owns the Internet Provider came by to look at things (it is a new building, and they have been having some other problems). He uninstalled Zone Alarm, and said that it had caused the problem. Now I wasn't there, and from what my non-techie girlfriend said, "There are 2 open connection ports, and Zone Alarm blocked them. And when he restarted the computer, even without Zone Alarm, the ports came back blocked." Does this sound familiar to anyone? I know that I probably didn't provide all the necessary info, but I can if you ask. Should I try to contact a local IT guy, Zone Alarm, MS, or anyone else? Please help if you can, as I am having all the blame put on me at the moment, and you don't want to see my girlfriend when she can't check her email!!! Thanks a lot! -Sean |
The problem probably lies with teh Ethernet card. How is
it reported in the Device Manager? Try identifying the make and model of Ethernet card and then visit its site for the latest driver file for it. Network drivers - Network-Drivers.com - This site maintains listings of network drivers available on the web, organized by company. Includes links to useful resources. - http://www.network-drivers.com/ You'll have to use your computer to download the driver. I would purchase a USB flash drive in order to make the transfer to her PC, or you can use Winzip and copy the file to more than a single floppy disk, if it requires more than one. P.S. If nothing works, try using a different Ethernet card.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out the card. I forgot to
include, however, that this setup worked on a previous ethernet connection (dorm connection). This makes me think that the newly installed Zone Alarm caused the problem, but I could veery well be wrong. Thanks again! -Sean |
