Context menu delay?

I have three separate systems that use 98SE, two of them also have XP HOME on a separate bootable
hd which do not have the problem. Intermintily I have noticed a delay when right clicking a file,
folder, or Icon. The delay may be from a second or two to minutes. There is nothing major running
in the background, virus scan, defrag, etc, and the systems are relatively fast. I have found
nothing that helps on Goggle, any ideas? It's nothing major and has been going on for a time,

If you search for your subject line in Google and Google Groups, you will find
enough discussion on this to keep you busy all month.

1. Remove everything from My Documents to a new folder on the desktop. If
this cures the problem, find a home for what you moved and limit how much
you file in My Documents in the future.

2. If no joy with #1, what Glen said.

It was an older McAfee scan engine that did that to me, & worse. But you say you run none. Do as Badour said. If not cured, let us see what is running. Use the Edit menu of MSInfo32 to copy, & post your Running Tasks...

For investigative purposes...

(1) WinTop will show as many tasks running as "START, Run, MSInfo32,
Software Environment, Running Tasks", which is twice as many as
Ctrl-Alt-Del. Microsoft's WinTop works in Win98, though written for
Win95. It shows individual CPU & RAM usage figures & updates it's
display every 2 seconds. Get WinTop from
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/d.../w95kerneltoy/
Download it into a folder of it's own. It's a single executable called
"W95KRNLTOYS.EXE". When you click it, it will unzip and reveal many
applications. All of them are a danger to Win98, except WinTop; delete
them. You will be left with:

W95KRNLTOYS.EXE
WINTOP.INF
WINTOP.TXT
WINTOP.VXD
WINTOP.EXE

You R-Clk WINTOP.INF & select "Install". Click OK to the requestor
stating that a disk is required. Another requestor will appear & allow
you to locate the folder that has the files listed above. WinTop.exe
will be copied to C:\Windows. You may go there, R-Clk it, point to "Send
To" & create a shortcut on the Desktop. Click it to execute. Otherwise,
"START, Run, WinTop".

Yikes, what a RAM hog Explorer is-- & NetZero too! They are eating this
machine alive!

Explorer: 18 threads.
Code Data
Allocated: 15,624K 7,932K
In memory: 5,888K 6,688K
In use 3,522K 3,552K

NetZero: 37 threads.
Code Data
Allocated: 7,624K 16,348K
In memory: 3,272K 9,252K
In use 2,488K 8,252K

NetZero: 3 more threads (icon in tray).
Code Data
Allocated: 3,248K 4,012K
In memory: 876K 1,164K
In use 440K 696K

(2) Do you have "System Monitor" in START... System Tools? If not, get
it from "START, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows
Setup tab, D-Clk System Tools, check System Monitor, OK, Apply, OK". May
as well take "Resource Meter", too. Now, go through the menus and at
least have it display

(a) Swap file in use.
(b) Swap file size.
(c) Swappable memory.
(d) Unused physical memory.
(e) Allocated memory.
(f) Disk cache size.
(g) Locked memory
(h) Other memory
(i) Kernel Processor Usage
(j) Kernel Threads

I must go. I'm on my way to Saskatchewan & have no time to explain what
each of those are. Just watch that "in use" figure, is all, for now.

PCR,

Thanks for the tip on W95KRNLTOYS.exe. Unlike KG, I was not having
trouble with my context menu but downloaded it just to get a better idea of
what was using my resources. To my amazement, I found that the largest user
of my ancient PII 300 Mhz processor time (at idle) was the free version of
PopUp Stopper -- around 15%. After exiting PopUp Stopper, much to my
surprise, I found that I wasn't getting popups -- probably because of
other "protective" software. Don't see any immediate positive effect of
getting rid of P/U stopper, but it's nice to know that my limited processor
time is not being wasted. (Win 98SE user, BTW)

Thank you for all the replies, it will keep me entertained for a while. Using Msinfo to look at
background processes I find I'am not the user of this system Microsoft is, out of 24 running MS is
18 of them. Thanks again.

Good. Yea, you could always reinstall PopUp Stopper at some later date, if they start up again. Glad to be of assistance.

You are welcome. Yea, take those task names to...

http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q137367
Startup Items
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q179365/ Startup Group
http://aumha.org/a/loads.htm

http://www.djbdesigns.com/wtvzone/startup.html

http://www2.cajun.net/~theriots/blk/start.htm
http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm
http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html

Some of those are better than others. If you find a task you want to disable...

(1) If it's a running app, check it menus or R-Clk it's icon for an option to shut it down.

(2) "START button, Run, MSConfig, Startup tab".
Some would prefer to uninstall it, though, instead of using that tab.

(3) "Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Install/Uninstall tab".
