Problem installing USB drivers
 

I have Win 98SE and am trying to install Drivers for a USB Flash Disk.
Product name Rundisk has no support site . The included floppy has the
setup.ex and an inf file. I have completed the setup.ex and it tells me
drivers are loaded. I DID NOT do anything with the inf file. When the USB
Flash is plugged in (the first time) a New Device Wizzrd came up and could
not find the proper driver. On a second attempt at the wizzard did not appear
at all. I am obviously missing something (or the Floppy is a dud). Can
someone direct me to the correct method to instll Drivers ? Is the inf file
crucial to Windows finding the driver ? Any help would be great.

Inf files can be very important but not necessarily. You don't mention the
name of the inf file and sometimes, it's purpose is simply to run the setup
that you say you ran manually. Othertimes, the inf file contains the
information that Windows needs to install the driver correctly.

Your device should have come with at least a readme type file with
instructions on installing the device. How each device is installed depends
a lot on how the manufacturer decided to write the installation files. In
some cases, you must run the installation before connecting the device and
in others, you must connect the device and then run the installation. With
USB devices, it's more common to install the device before connecting it.

Try booting into Safe mode, then go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager
and remove any devices that show up here with a ? or a red X, and any listed
under Other. Exit Device Manager and say "no" to rebooting and then Exit
and Shutdown Windows. After a few seconds, turn the system back on.
Right-click on the inf file and choose Edit to see what's in it. If it is
an Autorun.inf then it's probably not important but if it has driver
information, then you will want to point the installer at this disk when it
says it can't find the driver. Also check the disk to see if there are one
or more folders. The correct inf file might be in a folder and not in the
root.

Once you have determined where the required inf file is (if it exists), run
the setup again and when asked for the drivers, say Have Disk and then
browse to the inf file with the driver information.

Your information was very helpfull. Unfortunately this very inexpensive
Flash Drive had no instructions in the Box; no Web site address and no READ
ME in the files. Not knowing all the various methods for installing Drivers
makes it hard for us novices. Your detailed explanation helped a lot and the
Flash Drive does work very nicely.

It seems like I have one of these very same rundisk usb memory sticks, and
have yet to find a windows 98SE solution. Alas, ours did not come with a
floppy disk and can not find a suitable driver. What was the solution to
the problem here?

Hi Barry
Can you obtain the floppy disk from whoever sold you the unit ? It is the
only source of the driver that I know about. My search for the mfg website
came up empty.
My Flash Disk is P/N 701CRU0001 and 128 MB and I do have the floppy of the
driver used for Win 98/98SE. BUT, I am in Canada and suspect from your
handle you might be in nzl.
If all else fails for you, post your e-mail address (if you wish) and maybe
we can work something out. On the other hand it may be easier and cheaper to
buy another one.

I haven't tried these (I used WinXP), but have passed what I downloaded on
to two of my customers who are using Win98.

If these don't work, please let me know. I have some that my supplier
gave me, but I can't post these here.
