Dial-up Networking

Running Win Me dial-up connection, IE 6.0

When opening IE thru ISP(PeoplePC.com), the dial-up network flashes in the
tray bar, I click on it and it reads that another program is dialing the
selected connection.

There are no other ISP's. All settings for IE, modem, dial-up and OE are
thru the above ISP (can't get an answer from them).
Any ideas as of why this behavior is occurring?
Would appreciate an answer.
Thanks,
Ed

Thanks for getting back. The exact message in dial-up networking reads:
"Another program is dialing the selected connection."

Thanks.

Ed

P.S. I'm new at this. If my e-mail address shows up again, would appreciate
you let me know how to turn it off.

Nope, it is still in your news account as your email address. In Outlook
Express on the Tools menu select Accounts and on the News tab, select the
Microsoft account and click Properties, change the email address there.

I have no idea what your er, error message means but it does seem
suspicious. There are endless posts in this group about detecting Hijacks so
I shall steal some advise from one of Noel Paton's:

"You may already have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system."

Regards,
ern.

What with? ... Changing your email address?

In Outlook Express Tools Accounts News tab.
highlight the account name that you are using,
click 'Properties' button.

On the 'General' tab,
halfway down under 'User Information'.

In the 'Name' box, type the name you wish to appear in the headers
of your posts, at the moment you seem to have your real email address,
as you can see, I have George Gee in there, (not my real name).

In the 'Email Address box' type *anything* but your real address,
Your real address is *totally unnecessary* in these newsgroups.

Hope this helps

Dial-up Networking

Good morning Ern,

Thank you and thanks to Noel. The step-by step procedures you provided are
complete.
Happy to report that I don't have any viruses, trojans, et al.

I have not encountered the original situation with Dial-up Networking
saying: "another program is dialing the selected connection".
Loved the Stinger program you guys provided. It only took 20 minutes to
run, as opposed to 2 hours with McAfee's A/V pgm I had on my computer, which
I decided to remove.(The latter is really a "hog" and eats all your
resources.)
Thanks again and regards,

Ed
