Hi,

When I am trying to download a bigger file (say maybe 7 or 10MB), what
happens on my Windows 98 system, is that
the screen goes dark, after it has been downloading for a while, which
I would imagine is normal to happen-- which I would imagine is the
screen saving sort of function; but when I move the mouse again,
to get the screen going again, the screen lights up again,
but seems to "freeze up"/ be garbled ie if I can try to hopefully describe
what
the screen looks like -- it gets covered in a sort of grey
screen -- all across, or sometimes, just part of the screen.
It appears that the computer is still operating; that the computer
has not frozen, but just that now, you cannot see what is going
on, on the screen. So you have to restart.

What I think I may have done (?) once, is accidentally, to have reset a
setting for my display, on "My Computer", "Control Panel", "Display"
ie I hope/don't think my computer is actually broken
-- but I can't seem to find, if that is the case, which setting to
set back. I have tried to reset the number of pixels; that doesn't
seem to be right; I've tried the
screen saver settings; but I still get the problem sometimes it seems
-- it was ok for a while (I think) when I changed the screen saver to another
one; but that appears to only have lasted for a while, and I'm getting
this problem again.

So I really don't know what to do here.

And it's essentially preventing me from downloading bigger files,
because the screen freezes up.

So I'm sort of praying that there might be a way of being able to fix it ?

Could you help ?

Does the screen go dark if you continue to use the computer during the
download (eg, play a game)?

Have you turned the screen saver off (None)?

The screen darkening might be due to the system entering a power down mode.
It is not unusual to have problems with some part of the system after
recovering from low power mode. Do Start / Settings / Control Panel and
select Power Management. Make sure the Always On scheme is selected.

Hi Jeff.

Thankyou very much for that message.

I have made a note of it.

Since writing my post last night, I have tried this -- on
"My Computer"/"Control Panel"/"Display", to do with the screen saver,
it asks to the effect of, how long do you want it to last for, and gives you
a whole range of options, including "never". I actually chose "never" now,
and am waiting to see if that works ie hopefully, in that way, preventing the
screen from going dark. So far, it hasn't. So hopefully, it will carry on
like that, I'm not sure.

If it doesn't I will try the method you have suggested.

Do you think that sounds ok ?

John
