windows not recognizing new additional hard drive
 

I have an e-Machine 633ids with Windows ME
Existing 15 gig hard drive. Additional 20 gig hard drive with external
enclosure

Windows isn't recognizing the hard additional drive. It isn't listed in "My
computer". Here's what I have so far: I'm not really sure if these are new or
existing but here goes:

System Properties - Device Manager

Disk Drives 1. Generic IDE Disk Type01 2. Generic NEC Floppy Disk 3. hpz 4.
IEEE-1284.4 COmpatible WDM Mass Storage Device (HPH11) 5. IEEE-1284.4 IOS
Port Driver (HPH11)

Hard Disk Controllers 1. Intel 82801AA Bus Master IDE Controller 2. Primary
IDE Controller (dual fifo) 3. Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)

Storage device 1. ! USB Disk (has an exclamation point next to it)

Universal Serial Bus controllers 1.? Generic USB Hub (this has a
question mark beside it) 2. Intel(r) 82801AA USB Universal Host
Controller 3. USB Root Hub

Now the properties for USB Disk says "This device is either not
present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers
installed. (Code 10.) and the properties for Universal Serial Bus
controllers 1. says it's working properly

When I did the plug and play thing I got a message that the file
usbmphlp.pdr couldn't be found. I found it in my Windows/Cab. I
tried udating drivers, but windows says all my drivers are up to
date. what is a .pdr file and what do I need to do with it? How can
I get my system to recognize this new hard drive?

Has the new drive been formatted?

The Code 10 message indicates that the driver is not installed correctly.
Boot to Safe Mode, open the Device Manager and delete all USB related
entries including those for the external drive. Boot back into Normal
Mode and let the system redetect your hardware and reinstall the necessary
drivers. If you get asked for a file such as usbmphlp.pdr make sure you
point the installer at the folder containing your Win Me cab files, that
is the folder containing BASE2.CAB.

The instruction say that there should be 5 options in fdisk but there isn't.
I've double checked everything and it doesn't show.....NOW WHAT?

Okay, now here's what's happening. Everything in the computer is recognizing
the hard drive, except "my computer". There isn't a drive letter for it.
When I go to system properties the Maxtor hard drive is listed and nothing
has an exclamation point on it and according to the properties, "the devices
are working properly". I'm getting so aggrevated. I just want some
additional hard drive space.

Oh and something else, when I go to fdisk like the instruction said to the
link to WD that was posted earlier, I get all the way through and it says to
please wait while verifying the integrity of the drive and then it stops and
says that there is no space to create a DOS partition. It's only a 20 gig
hard drive, does that make a difference?

The operating system cannot assign a drive letter until the disk is
partitioned using fdisk. Now that you've got the system to recognise the
disk and got rid of the Code 10 driver problem proceed as follows:
Open a DOS window (either Start | Run | enter command.com and click enter,
or use the shortcut at Start | Programs | Accessories)
Now enter FDISK at the command prompt, and most essential, click Y when
asked if you want to enable large disk support.
You should now see at the top of the screen the line:
Current fixed disk drive: 1
Now that you have both hard disks recognised by the system you will see at
5) "Change current fixed disk drive". Type a 5 and then click enter and
you should now see your external USB disk listed as 2 with no partitions
or drive letters. Enter 2 to switch to this drive and now create a
partition layout to suite your needs using option 1 and option 4 to review
the partition layout on drive 2.

You won't see option 5 which is used to switch drives until the system
recognises that you have more than one drive and to do that you first need
to fix the driver problem you are seeing and get rid of the Code 10 error
you mention.

Let's hope so Mart. I wondered if you'd missed the reference to a Code 10
error.

I have learned something though from this thread which I hadn't realised
until I checked it out for myself and that is that FDISK option 5, to
change drive, is only present when the system sees more than one drive. I
tested it here on a Win Me VM which has just the one virtual drive as I've
always been used to seeing option 5 as my old celeron here that's running
Win Me has two drives. So if a user doesn't see option 5 in fdisk when
they've added a new drive then they've got a driver or connection problem
that needs to be dealt with.
