ACOM Data External Drive (F) causes ME, not XP to hang

I am experiencing this same problem. My external F drive
causes my main computer (to which it is attached) to hang
frequently. However, it does not cause my other computer
(laptop running XP) to hang. My machine is hanging even
when I don't access it. What brand do you have?
-----Original Message-----
I've purchased an external USB drive for my Windows ME
system. Installation seems fine, the drive is

recognized
and shows up as a separate drive in My Computer (within
Device Manager I defined it as 'removable' and named it
Drive F). The problem arises when try to interact with
the drive (e.g. copy a file to it or simply open it from
My Computer). It causes the system to completely freeze
and I have to either power off the drive or the computer
itself. By the way, the drive works fine on an XP
laptop. Any idea why it would be making ME choke like
this?

Thanks.

Try running it through a powered hub. See if that improves things.

Hi Mart,

Thanks - I'm not a techie. What is a powered hub? This
was just a plug and play.

Jlo, a (USB) hub is a device designed to increase the number of (USB) ports
or outlets available from a PC.

As USB devices need power, often the existing ports on a PC do not provide
sufficient power to drive all devices successfully.

A 'powered hub' includes an external power unit to supply this extra power
and fitting one therefore *may* overcome the problem which you are
experiencing.

It might also be worth looking at "General USB Troubleshooting in Windows
98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Me"

for further ideas.

J Lo, Yes - here's just one example (which is not meant to be an
endorsement!)
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProdu...duct_Id=123917

But your local PC store should be able to offer a selection of different
manufacturers devices (and prices!) Just search for 'USB Hubs' and look for
'Powered Hubs'

BTW - there's no guarantee that this will solve your particular issue - but
the fact that your external drive does at least work sometimes - if
'infrequently' - on your WinMe computer suggests that you are in with a
chance and the WinMe drivers are correct.
