How can I find out why COMM2 port shows invalid or busy

My ESS modem reports that the port is busy. How can I find out why? I
formatted the hard drive on my Winbook laptop and started to do a
clean install of win 98SE. I have a combination M2EM PCI (Maestro)
sound card / modem made by ESS. I followed the Winbook's instructions
to get the sound card and modem installed correctly. The sound card
seems to work correctly but when I try to dial out with the modem
using the dialer in the start menu under accessories – communications
I get the message “another program is using the selected telephone
device. But as far as I know that is not the case.
I then installed AOL and when I try to go out to get my local access
numbers it reports that the communications port is invalid or busy.
The modem model is ESS ES56CVH-PI Data Fax Voice Modem.
In the device manager of the system control panel under the modem
listing it says that the device is working properly.
Also In the device manager however under the Ports (COMM & LPT) there
is only the communication port COMM1 and the printer port LTP listed.
Should I also see a COMM2 listing?
In the modem control panel under that modems sub listing under the
General Tab shows COMM2 which is what the documentation from ESS and
Windbook says the modem should use. And if I go to the diagnostic tab
and select it and try to get more info I get the message couldn’t open
port then I get the more info box that has port info as:
Port COMM2
Interrupt 5
Address 2F8
UART is grayed out
Highest speed shows no response
How can I find out why the port shows invalid or busy?

How do I change it from 5 to 3?

Go to "Control Panel", "System", "Device Manager", expand "Ports",
double-click "COM2", select "Resources", then click "Setting based on..."
and find one that uses Interrupt 3. If there aren't any, highlight "Interrupt
Request" and click "Change Setting".

How can I find out why COMM2 port shows invalid or busy

The COMM2 Port is a virtual port. It is created as part of the software
installation for the modem and sound card. It appears that the installation
has failed, and COMM2 does not exist. You need to review the installation
process and determine where it may have failed. Are you sure you are using
the latest version of the drivers? Are you sure you followed the
installation procedure as set out by the manufacturer? Is the machine
showing any other problems that may have interfered with the installation of
the software?

Have you followed the advice that Mr Terhune provided last time you tried
this install?

Ben I did you read my question I said I do not have a COMM2 listing in
my device manager. I went to the modem listing in device manager where
I got the resources information and tried to change the interrupt from
5 to 3. I got the message This resource setting cannot be modified.
