BTBroagband and WinMe

I am finding very difficult to connect the
WinMe computer to BTBroadband.

We have WinXP -Laptop connected to the
BT via Wireless without and problem.
The WinMe computer has TP-Link 10/100M Fast Ethernet Model no:TF3200
Adapter (802.3).

I shall be very grateful for an advice as the
BThub ver 2.o cannot get connected to the
WinMe via cable.
The TP-Link adapter is seems acceptable by the WinMe

A very *blonde* answer here, but I know for a fact that I cannot hook up my
WinME to my Rogers cable at all. That is according to the techs at my ISP.
Guess it is too fast or summat. It is now a very large paperweight, but may
double check it before chucking it down to the basement.

Heather (and Mike or Noel should be able to sort this out)

AAH,

There is absolutely no reason why a PC running Win Me shouldn't be able to
connect to a BT Homehub using a wired connection. The hub (or rather
switch) has little interest in the operating system in use on the attached
devices, all it requires is that the devices can communicate using the
TCP/IP protocol.

What does Win Me's Device Manager have to say about your TF3200? Does it
show as being installed and working or is it yellow banged (!) or show some
other error? As you say, the TF3200 is Win Me compatible and should work.
If the device manager shows that everything is OK do the following:

From the Start | Run box enter WINIPCFG and click OK
Does this show your network card in the drop down box at the top?
What does this show as the IP address and Default Gateway for your network
card?
I think that by default the BT Homehub uses the 192.168.1.xxx range of
addresses with the hub having the 192.168.1.254 address and would expect to
see 192.158.1.254 as being the IP address for the Default Gateway and DHCP
server.
Click "More info "
What IP addresses are listed for your DNS servers? Click the ... button to
the right of the address to see the second address.
What Node Type does it show? Are there any entries in the NetBIOS Scope Id,
IP Routing Enabled, NetBios Resolution Uses DNS and WINS Proxy enabled
boxes?
If you click "Release All" and then "Renew All" do the IP addresses of the
Adapter, Default Gateway and DHCP server change?

If you log on to the homehub, does it have an option to see a list of
connected devices and their IP addresses? If yes, is the Win Me PC listed?
What is the IP address of your XP laptop when connected?

Heather,

Apples, pears and oranges are very different fruits. You would have had
zero problems connecting your Win Me box to Rogers cable if you were to have
used a router or hub. Any problems you had would have been due to
connecting the cable modem directly to your Win Me PC.

It took me a while to find an old adapter with the software definitely OK
with Windows ME. It picks up 100% from my router at a distance of almost 95
feet through a ceiling. My ISP had only new stuff that wouldn't even install
on ME.

OK, thanks..........I think I was asking them if this machine was in the
shop, could I hook up WinME to the cable modem. But I now have the router
on here sorta permanently, so I guess I could plug the old one into it. I
believe I did that before. May just give that a shot.

Cheers, from freezing cold Ontario.

The TP-Link TF3200 is a network card (NIC) rather than a wi-fi card and
since it has Win Me drivers it should have no problem connecting to any
router, switch or hub. You are however spot-on about wi-fi adapters, there
are only a few still available for which Win Me drivers are available. As
for ISP software this is something I recommend most users try to avoid. It
rarely offers anything they can't do already using their browser with the
exception of those using a usb modem for either cable or adsl.

DGateway 192.168.1.254

The TF3200 adapter software has provided clearly separate driver for

not show any sign of error.
The adapter standard is marked on the pack

Ah yes - a typical BT setup (they are the only ones that seem to set up the
router as being x.x.x.254)
It certainly looks as if you should be connected, from that.
What happens if you open IE, and type 192.168.1.254 into the address bar?
you should get the router's admin page - and/or maybe a password request.

If that's OK - then try opening a DOS window, and typing PING GOOGLE.COM
what response do you get?

Are the Win ME and XP machines in the same Workgroup? (System
Properties/Computer Name.....)

I long ran an HP Pavilion 6745C (Windows ME) on a DSL connection. Used a
router between the modem and computer.

My brother-in-law also connected a Windows ME computer to cable Internet
using a modem and router set up similar to mine.

Any ISP specific issues would be handled by the modem, and should be
transparent to the OS on the other side of the modem from the ISP.
