upgrading from windows 98

Hello everyone,

I have an old computer I'd like to upgrade from Windows 98.
Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of applications and add-ons no
longer support 98, so I'm interested in upgrading the computer OS,
rather than just throwing it away.

The computer is a Hewlett Packard Pavilion, and it has 46MB ram. It
was purchased back in 1998, but surprisingly it still runs great.

What could I upgrade it to.....what OS package should I seek out?
I've read the requirements of XP, and it's required that you need to
at least have 64 MB ram minimum?

Is there any current OS system out there that should be able to
install with my computer's specifications?

thanks

I wouldn't attempt upgrading any higher than WinXP SP3, and I wouldn't do
that if the machine didn't pass the WinXP Upgrade Advisor compatibility
tests with flying colors (if you can even find the standalone utility now).
[Actually, I wouldn't attempt it anyway.]

Unless you intend to install more memory, *no* - for Windows unless the
upgrade is to 98SE. Even then you will notice resource issues as 128 is the
minimum to adequately enjoy the OS.

XP requires a fast processor [800 MHZ, to a gig or more preferred] AND 512
megs memory [minimum] if you intend to do anything with the OS... other than
sitting and watching as it load programs. XP and VISTA are memory,
processor, and space hogs. I have run it on a 200 MHZ. P1 with 64 megs and
it isn't fun [about like watching paint dry].

An older version of Linux would work and better than 98.

What processor speed, and hard drive size?

1. Go to the HP web site and find out how much RAM your particular
model can use. WinXP requires at least 128 Mb for efficiency,
preferably 512 Mb. RAM chips are now cheap.
2. What hardware (e.g. printers) or software (e.g. music editing)
would be enabled by another OS because Win98 does not support them?
3. You may or may not bound to Windows: several Linux interfaces are
familiar to Windows users.

I am just a home user, not a corporate slave, but I have yet to
find a useful application of which there is no 98-friendly
version or a 98-friendly equivalent to what the sheep use.

The best browser, Opera, runs on all 32 bit platforms, as any
good program should.

The computer is a Hewlett Packard Pavilion, and it has 46MB
ram. It was purchased back in 1998, but surprisingly it

It can probably take up to 256 or 384. There are online shops
where you can get RAM for your specific old machine, it's not
that expensive either. If not for a really cheap ADSL offer, I
would still be running (as I did from 1997 to last Sept) a
166MHz with 64 (upped it a bit but it didn't make THAT much
difference) and Win95B. The ONLY worthwhile thing it could not
do is convert music between formats - in less than 5 hours per
song that is. I do not consider web video sites worthwhile and I
am not interested in vieo editing. It did voice chats perfectly,
WITH a 33.6 modem, for the two weeks that I bothered.

What could I upgrade it to.....what OS package should I

With a little research and thought, no one needs to go to XP
unless there is some application they MUST HAVE (and that does
not have a better and often free equivalent) that will not run
on anything else.

Is there any current OS system out there that should be
able to install with my computer's specifications?

thanks

My 166MHz 95B system was faster than any XP or Vista machine
around (except for the aforementioned music conversion).

Submitted for tour consideration.

Realistically you need an absolute minimum of 256 megs of RAM for XP
and a 400 mhz cpu to run XP...
though even double those specs and that's just barely enough to run it
decently.

Damn Small Linux will run on that machine,
though you should still bump the RAM up to 64 megs.

Otherwise, just stick with win98...it's still a usable OS
