ME/Vista network problem

I have a small home network that has worked fine with 2 ME machines for
quite a while. I replaced one of my machines with a Vista machine. The
Vista machine works fine seeing and logging on to the ME machine but the ME
to Vista has problems. The ME machines sees the Vista machine but when I
click on the Vista machine I get this message:

Enter Network Password

You must supply a password to makes this connection

Resource \\Comp2\IPC$

Password

Comp2 is the Vista machine.

I can't figure out what the password should be nor how to set up one.

I have password protected off on the Vista machine.

Any help would very much be appreciated.

Try creating a user on Vista with the same username as that in use on Win
Me.

In this case, create the same username with a password on both computers. This case study may help,

Thanks for the fast reply.

I have created the same user on both machines with a password but that has not helped.

Are you logged on to Win Me as that user?

I don't think ME can read NTFS.

That's correct but when sharing files it is the host machine that handles
the file system not the client. For example think how many web sites that
you visit are running on Linux but this doesn't stop you viewing them from
a PC that knows nothing of the Linux file system.

ME/Vista network problem

Here's some info that might be helpful, although it sounds like your problem
is in the other direction, Bill. However, I'm just putting this out there in
case.

Cannot Authenticate to a Shared Folder from a Windows Vista-based Computer
If you cannot authenticate when accessing a shared folder from a Windows
Vista-based computer on a computer running a version of Windows prior to
Windows XP (such as Windows 98 and Windows 95), a computer running an
operating system other than Microsoft Windows, or to a network device, the
cause might be a mismatch in the configured support for NTLM 2, an
authentication protocol that is used for file and printer sharing
connections. By default, Windows Vista is configured to use NTLM 2.

To address this issue, you can do one of the following:

a.. Enable NTLM 2 support on the computer or device to which the Windows
Vista-based computer is attempting to connect. For computers running
versions of Windows prior to Windows XP, see How to enable NTLM 2
authentication (URL:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239869). For computers
running operating systems other than Windows, see the operating system's
product documentation for information about how to enable NTLM 2 support.
For network devices, see the device's product documentation or Web site for
information about how to enable NTLM 2 support or download a firmware update
that supports NTLM 2. This is the preferred solution.

a.. If you cannot update the computers running operating systems other
than Windows or your network devices to support NTLM 2, change the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel
registry value on the computer running Windows Vista to 1. This solution is
not recommended.
Thanks, and good luck!
Gloria

Doesn't need to. I have two computers with NTFS, and the Windows ME
computer
has no problem with file sharing. It appears to be some kind of Windows
Vista security issue involving passwords. I had trouble with password
protected shares on the Windows ME computer in that something about the
Windows MCE 2005 computers couldn't automatically mount the network
drives.
Despite being based on Windows XP, Windows MCE apparently lacks the
ability
to save passwords. The quick and dirty solution was to remove password
protection on the Windows ME shares; not a problem on a wired LAN with
only
two users.
