Hello again,

This is about a 1997 PCChips M572 MB, a Belkin 2 port USB card,
and USB drivers to get the whole thing to work. It appears quite
a few people HAVE done it, but I have had very limited success,
and have yet to see a stick flashing after being plugged in.

I should mention I have installed Win98SELite on this machine,
and it is running just fine.

I also upgraded the BIOS to the latest version from 1999. AMong
many others, I read a thread from someone who tried to do the
same thing and mentioned some of the same weird error messages
("CPU setting incorrect", etc.) but with some perseverance I
managed to overcome all those problems and everything is working
just fine. I have saved this new configuration - and I also have
the original BIOS config saved.

I know you guys know a lot about older stuff. In fact, in 2007
we participated in a thread about getting USB to work with the
very same Belkin 2-port card for the PCChips M572 MB. I have
since managed to correctly (yes, I did it wrong then) connect
this card to my MB, and Device Manager shows 2 USB ports as
working correctly.

The problem is that when I plug in a USB flash drive, nothing
happens.

I have spent several days searching, I have all of Maximum
Decim's drives from 2.00 to 3.3, and the tiny Italian driver
which is supposed to work wonders, "wtgenusb" - it installs but
does not function properly and there's nothing I can do.

I also tried to install Kingston Data Traveler II drivers (these
are the sticks I use) but it will not install properly for
reasons I do not understand. All that ends up in its direwctory
is *eject.exe (I forget) and two inf files, both 0 bytes. No
wonder it does nothing.

I did get /somewhere/ with the 2.23 version of Max Decim - it
actually showed "Pen Drive something" in Device Manager, but
still, nothing worked.

I want to try ALL the Max Decim drivers, especially the 2.x
versions, but in trying the 2 or 3 I have tried so far I keep on
running into a rather annoying problem.

After I remove all the MS USB stuff in the Device Manager,
whether in normal of safe mode, and I install Max Decim, which
then asks for a reboot, when I am (re)booting into Windows,
Windows claims to have found "new hardware" and installs the
very same drivers I just removed prior to the Max Decim install.

I have gone through this nearly 10 times by now, and it keeps on
happening. A vicious circle.

I am really fond of this 1996 computer, and while for a few
years I really did not need to use it, I could REALLY use it
now. Plus my KVM switch is feeling unneeded!

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks,
t.

No, although I did see MANY.

Amazing array of drivers. Let's see if they work.

Thank you VERY much.

I love it. The LITE version. Active Desktop etc. are unbearable.

I never ran Active Desktop with Win98SE - you don't need the Lite version
for that. What other "etc" you're talking about, who knows. Win98SE is,
in itself, pretty light.

Yes. I've run Win Lite...
but Win98 unmodified works fine on most any p-1 and up with at least 64
megs of RAM.

When I first used it I had a p-1 75mhz with 40 megs of RAM.

I eventually upgraded the machine to 200mhz and 128 megs of ram
and it performed very well.

The only reason I eventually moved on to Win2k was
because I was continually plugging in and removing USB devices
and even if I used the devices properly I'd occasionally lock up the
system. Never happened once with win2k
