Outlook Express Problem

My wife is running Win98 and Outlook Express 6 on her desktop.
Sometimes when she opens OE, there are no messages showing in
the Inbox. There is this error message:

Folder Could Not Be Displayed
Outlook Express could not open this folder
Possible causes a
* low disk space
* low memory

Disk space and memory are not an issue. Rebooting always solves
the problem. This error comes up maybe once every 10 times.
There are only 750 messages in her inbox, so it's not overloaded.
The Sent and Deleted folders always work perfectly.

Any idea what the real problem is?

Thanks!
Scott

Scott,
I have read somewhere that OE has problems with large numbers of messages in
its default folders e.g. Inbox and you should keep the number to a minimum.
I think the info is at this web site http://www.insideoe.com/ but I can't
find the article at present. As a suggestion, create a new personal folder
for all the existing Inbox messages and move all of them to it. When I have
located the info I am after, I will repost.

Outlook Express Problem

I have found the information I was looking for in an earlier post.

The size for each folder is supposed to be 2GB, but you will lose messages
long before you reach that size. Create new user created local folders.

Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become
corrupted. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move
your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created
folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible.

After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while
working *offline* and do it often.

Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no
folders are open. Then: FileWork Offline (or double click Working Online in
the Status Bar). FileFolderCompact all folders. Don't touch anything until
the compacting is completed.

In ToolsOptionsMaintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and
leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}.
