Windows98SE computer with broadband will go offline after a while
I've sort of got used to restarting the computer as it's not so frequent
now, but just wanna ask again to see if there's anything I can do to prevent the computer from dropping offline. The next time it happens unplug the modem, wait about 30 seconds and plug it back in. See if the connection lights are on the modem are on and/or if you can connect. If it still doesn't work call your ISP to see if there is an issue or if work is being done on the cable. If no to both they will run a test on the connection (which I found not to trust). If they say you have a connection and you clearly do not, replace the modem again as it may be defective. I had the same problem about a 2 years ago and the problem was the modem. -- Brian A. Hello, I've got Win98SE machine and a broadband which is supposed to be always online. The broadband modem is Terayon TA-102. At first I suspect it's something wrong with the broadband modem and I've asked the ISP to come and replace it. However, even after replacing the modem, my computer will still go offline from time to time. I've tried running winipcfg to release the IP address and update it. I can release the IP address. However, when I update it, I get an error (I've forgotten the exact error message). And I'm still offline after getting that error message. So every time, I have to restart my computer to get to be able to get online again. So what can be wrong with the whole setup? Everything used to be fine before. Hope someone can tell me what to check. Thanks. Herbert |

The only way to prevent dropping the signal for the connection is to find the
cause. The cause can be in the cable anywhere between the ISP and modem, in the modem or in the connection configuration. Since you say "it's not so frequent" I would put the blame on the modem to the ISP. When ATT was my ISP before being bought out by Comcast, I had the modem replaced 3 times before the connection remained all the time without intermittent dropouts. -- Brian A.
