A better file search tool

Is there a better file search tool than the one that comes with Win98?

I want one that will search by the file extension. For example, I want
to find a file containing the word "beatles" and want only the .MP3
files. In the built in "finder", when I go to "Advanced", it wants me
to specify what program is used for MP3 files. Which in my case, I have
numerous programs that play music. There must be some add-on utility
that allows for simply searching for a word and the added file
extension.

Thanks

the built in tool is just fine

for search parameters just enter *.mp3

for example

The file-find ability that Windows 9x/ME has is far superior to any that
came with any windows-NT based version (2k, XP, Vista, 7, etc).

You will not accomplish what you want by going to the Advanced tab.

The way to perform your search is to enter this into the "Named" field
under the "Name & Location" tab:

*beatles*.mp3

That will find any file that ends in .mp3 that has "beatles" anywhere in
the file-prefix.

If you believe that the text-fragment "beatles" actually appears
somewhere in an mp3 file, then to search for any such file you put this
into the "Named" field:

*.mp3

And you put this into the "Containing text" field:

beatles

I'm not sure if mp3 files contain text (such as artist) in such a way
that it would be visible as plain text, but there's no harm in trying to
look and see if that search gives you what you want.

I have over 4000 MP3 files. And 99% of them are in one folder called
"Music". All that is gonna do is show all of them. That's not much
help. I may as well just go to that folder and start looking manually.

Ok, now we're getting somewhere. That works great. I was not aware of
putting the file-prefix in stars. I only knew to use the old dos *.mp3
command. And if I search for ALL EXTENSIONS with a certain filename I
might get thousands of unrelated file types. For example, I was looking
for REM (the band REM). I got words that contained REM such as REMind,
REMington, REMember, and so on....

Thanks

To get a more exact search you can use quotes

"beatles".mp3

They do, provided someone has entered that information. (In the
older-skin WinAmp, double-click on the bit near top right where the
title scrolls/appears to get to where you can enter/edit them; there are
ways in most other media players too. There are two types of these tags
- one where each field [artist, title, etc.] has a maximum length, and
one where it isn't.)

Ok, now we're getting somewhere. That works great. I was not aware of
putting the file-prefix in stars. I only knew to use the old dos *.mp3

It's not actually the prefix in stars - the star is a wildcard (i. e.
you don't need one _after_ the "mp3" [nor the ".", actually, unless you
have files with mp3 in the rest of the name!]).

command. And if I search for ALL EXTENSIONS with a certain filename I
might get thousands of unrelated file types. For example, I was looking

Now for that, assuming all those other words are included in song
titles, etc., I think the only solution is going to be a search utility
designed for mp3 files. I have looked at an mp3 with a hex viewer to see
if the artist tag has something before it that you could include, so you
could search for something like AR1:REM, but unfortunately the artist
tag (both types) has nulls before the name, which I don't think you
could put into the ordinary search tool.

You did say you had 4000 mp3 files; although I only have about 1656
sound files, I would recommend sorting them into folders and subfolders.
(I have classical, comedy, females, males, film, groups, Germanic,
novelty, No1so60s, organ, Moore, radio, and TV, and some others, all
with subfolders; everyone's sound collection varies and different ones
will suit.) I say this hesitantly, since (a) it'd be a lot of work, (b)
_nobody_ likes being told how to organise their files, (c) some people
may have playlists and similar which doing this will break. But I'd
still recommend it! I rarely have difficulty finding a track, or use the
find function (though I won't say I never use it!). I do this with
nearly all (data) filetypes, not just sound: basically, if I have more
than x files in one place, I subdivide them. (x varies, really depending
on what size of Explorer windows I have - basically, if I have to scroll
to see them all, I decide I have too many in one place. I'd say it's
around 15-30 normally.)

Works for me...

1. beatles in the "Serach for files or folders" tab

2. select .mp3 in the "Type" drop down box in "Advanced"

Doesn't for me.

If they have tags - either ID3V1 or ID3v2 - and if the tag has "beatles" in
it, the file will be found but it will take a long time as the search has to
examine the entirety of each file.

For general searches, AgentRansack is good.

For mp3 specific searches, an MP3 datbase program would be good. There are
many, some good, some less so. Some much less so.

I happen to like MP3Stock because it is fast and builds a minimally sized
database. It is old, seems to be no longer supported but still available;
however, it is tied to Winamp. It works very well with Winamp, is useless
otherwise.

That is a direct downlad of a zip from a website I used to have. It still
works. Reas the readme in the zip for info.
