Windows98 won't reinstall properly

I managed to click one too many 'yes to all' buttons when deleting some
files and lost windows\system\comctl32.dll with the result that Explorer
won't load and I was told I must reinstall Windows.

I have done so, several times, to the Windows directory. The problem
persists and the initial load of the new system fails.

So off I go to the KB, on my other machine, learn how to dig out both
Comctl32.dll and Commctrl.dll from the Cabs and copy them into System
manually. Now it boots but the Start button won't work, no pop-up menu, and
the bar between the Start Button and the System Tray is black and doesn't
show the minimised windows.

I'm tearing my hair out. Any ideas anyone? I know I could probably rename
the Windows folder and do a totally new install, but that means another day
scouring the house for the old application cd's then trying to reapply
patches to everything. Can anyone suggest anything less drastic?

Thanks

Something wrong here . . . You should have at least
one backup copy of comctl32.dll on the hard drive.
Look in c:\windows\vcm

Been at work tonight but thanks for the response. The only copy of
comctl32.dl Find can discover on the disk is the one I put in System
manually from the Cabs.

The system boots OK-ish but then has these weird deficiencies as noted in
the original post. Plus Explorer windows don't have any icon or menu bars at
the top. Since the Start menu won't work, not even using keyboard shortcuts
I can't shut the system down without crashing out. Explorer is clearly kind
of sick. I wonder if maybe I have an incompatible version of comctl32.dll?
Any way to find out what version I need and get it on the Web?

FIXED IT !!! :-) Mostly ;-(

Turns out, naturally, I was restoring an early version of Comctl32.dll,
which IE6 didn't like, Vn 4.72. Found a later version as a redistributable
with an installer on Microsoft's website, Vn 5.80.2614.3600. Don't know
whether it's because it is a later version or because it has an installer,
or both, but it fixes MOST of the problems I was having. I suspect a
re-install of IE 6 is what I really need but this machine isn't attached to
the internet just now.
