DVD player installation with Windows 98SE
 

I bought a used Dell laptop with Windows 98 SE installed. Somehow the DVD
player stopped working and the DVD player and all such software is missing. I
tried to install the Windows 98 DVD player but got an error message that said
something to the effect You cannot use a Windows 98 CD on Windows 98 SE. The
CD is now disabled! Is it disabled? How can I get my DVD player to install?
Can I uninstall the SE part and then use it or is there another way or is my
Windows 98 CD really disabled and unusable? What can I do?

Go to the DELL support site and search for drivers for your model laptop.

Windows 98SE will support the DVD drive as a CD-ROM. To get extra
functionality you will need the correct drivers for the device. If you have
diagnostic software that identifies the make and model of the DVD drive, you
may be able to get drivers from the manufacturer's www site.

them and they say it is not listed as having a DVD player!

If Dell sold the drive as an add-on peripheral device they should have
drivers for it on their www site. You won't find it listed under your model
machine if it wasn't supplied with that machine, but it should be somewhere
there, either as an add-on option or as part of the standard equipment for
some other model.

Or, you may find it is simply a DELL rebranding of some other manufacturer's
product, in which case you could get drivers from their site.

Note that the software originally provided with the drive would probably not
be available for download, but the drivers should be.

Have you confirmed that the W98se installation files are not saved on the
hard disk drive somewhere?

While trying to fix my DVD player with a CD that came with my laptop I wiped
out everything DVD related. On the Dell site they do not have the Tositha 4x
DVD player for Windows 98 SE I am looking for. Any suggestions as to where to
look from here?

According to Toshiba:
ATAPI CD-ROM and DVD Drivers
Toshiba's CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives do not require any unique device
drivers for Windows '95/'98/2000/XP/NT.

After installing your drive and re-booting, your system should
recognize your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. Win '95/'98/2000/XP/NT Operating Systems
support all Toshiba ATAPI CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives natively.


Boot to safe mode and remove any existing CD-ROM devices. Reboot and allow
Windows to re-install the drivers for any devices it finds. Have your
Windows inastallation CD ready, in case it needs to load drivers from the
CD. After the drivers are loaded, you should be able to read DVDs discs.

The computer recongnizes the DVD player and I can open the files on the DVD
but cannot play them.

Are the files you are trying to open a DVD movie?

In that case, you need a DVD movie player, not DVD device drivers.

Windows Media Player should be OK. What version are you running?

If you are trying to open some other type of files, then indicate what type
of files they are, and exactly what happens when you try to open them.
