Clean ME
Hi,
As I prepare to receive my new machine and move to XP, I'm going to sell my current PC running an OEM version of WinMe. It didn't come with a winME disk and I'm wondering is there a way to clean the PC and leave it as if ME has just been installed. Any ideas? Many thanks, Craig. |

Is there a Recovery Disk or Recovery Partition? - look in your manuals to
see. (there has to be, by law, some means for the user to reinstall the operating system) What Make is the machine? model?? -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "canna" wrote in message ... Hi Noel, All I know at this time is that it's a Time PC. I'm at work at the
moment but I will provide you with further info later. Probably around 5.30 pm(BST) I didn't buy it brand new but there was plenty of disks and manuals provided with it. I'll have a good look through them later. Thanks, Craig. "Noel Paton" wrote: Is there a Recovery Disk or Recovery Partition? - look in your manuals to see. Ah! - all bets are off....on three counts
1) Time went bust last year - and you have no chance of getting a replacement CD from their new management 2) Time were not noted for good practices, even when they weren't running from creditors 3) You got the PC second-hand - and that means that the previous owner may have (wrongly) retained the OS disks in the mistaken belief that he/she could install them on another PC with impunity. I'll probably be out when you post back - but either someone else will respond, or I'll respond on my return. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "canna" wrote in message ... Hi,
I have found a floppy disk in with some manuals. Could this be the recovery disk? There are 22 files on it, the first 6 a ATTRIB.EXE AUTOEXEC.BAT CHKDSK.EXE COMMAND.COM CONFIG.SYS COUNTRY.SYS Thanks, Craig. Craig,
No. That is a boot floppy. The recovery disk will be a CD, perhaps more than one depending on how much junk Time included with the system. I seem to recall though that Time charged customers extra for a recovery CD so you may be SOL. Check that the system doesn't have a hidden partition containing an image of the system as delivered, in such cases then a floppy disk such as you have found may well be all that is required to install that image but the five files you mention as being on the disk are amongst those that would be on a plain vanilla boot floppy. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows [2001-2006] canna wrote: Hi, I have found a floppy disk in with some manuals. Thanks Mike, looking at the disk further, it is just a standard boot floppy.
It looks like I don't have a recovery disk. How would I check the system for a hidden partition containing an image of the system as delivered? Cheers, Craig. Hi canna
Time supplied at extra cost a (in my case) green CD titled "Your Reload/Backup CDv6". This contains about 1.4Mb of files to access a Ghost image of the original "out of the box" state in hidden, non readable partition(s) on the HD. I do not know if all Time computers had the Ghost image loaded as standard on the HD and only had to put the recovery CD in the box or specially formatted HDs with the Ghost partition as a special. Mike M (I think) suggested a file to me that might detail hidden partitions, but when I tried that file, it did not find any hidden partitions on my HD. Only other thing I can suggest is; when you defrag, in the detail view, do you see lots of sectors shown as white squares with a red corner (data that will not be moved)? These MAY be the hidden Ghost partitions. If you want more details of my machine, unmunge my email addy and contact me direct. -- Delboy A common mistake that people made when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. Defrag will NOT show an 'image partition' - simply because Defrag only looks
at the active partition. The 'unmovable' clusters in defrag are usually the swapfile -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Delboy" wrote in message ...
