Registry Mechanic 3.0 for Windows
 

Hi:

I use Windows Me and know very little about the registry. I generally don't
edit the registry at all.

I downloaded a program called Registry Mechanic 3.0 which supposedly scans
and fixes invalid and/or orphaned registry items and claims to make a backup
of everything it alters.

Since it was a free trial download, I cant seem to get further info from
that site other than what's on that page above.

1) How safe is this utility to run on ME and simply "let it do its thing"?

2) How easy is it to uninstall after I get the system somewhat optimized ?

3) How easy is it to recover altered items from that backup?

Hello Eli:

I happen to have the Registry Mechanic installed on my machine.
Where safety is concerned, it is entirely in your hands, since you control
what you want the program to do.
To uninstall, you use Add/Remove Programs.
I don't think you have full use of the program until you purchase it.
Once you bought it, you wouldn't want to uninstall it, but merely refrain
from using it more than you'ld need to.
And you can easily recover deleted items from backup.
One has to be careful in removing many of the 'discovered' items, because
they may be tied in with other programs or functions, but they can be
restored with the backup utility.
To give you my personal assessment:
I don't use this program, unless I absolutely have to, because there is a
problem with the registry.
It provides a certain, limited feeling of security for me, besides the
ability to somewhat control the registry..
The rest is up to you.

(disclaimer: I have not used Reg Mech 3.0 and am not familiar with it)
From what I could see on the page you referenced, Reg Mech doesn't do
anything that jv16 Power Tools can't do and jv16 appears to be capable of a
lot more......plus, you can still get the free version. I have used jv16
Power Tools for a number of years and never had a problem with it. Just my
humble opinion, I could be wrong.

Your jv16 Power Tools look fairly good firsthand, but you'ld have to pay for
the program' don't you?
