Remote Control Software

Over the past couple of years I have seen where some of you
have experience with remote control software. I think this
capability might be handy sometimes for me to help my
daughter with problems.

In searching I have found these free programs:
RealVNC at http://www.realvnc.com/gettingstarted.html
UltraVNC at http://ultravnc.sourceforge.net/
and TightVNC at http://www.tightvnc.com/

Knowing I have never used any remote control software can
you recommend which of these (or others) might be best for
me?

I use RealVNC here when I need to get into a PC that doesn't natively
support Remote access (Windows XP does).

Hi Noel,
You say "I use RealVNC here when I need to get into a PC
that doesn't natively
support Remote access (Windows XP does)."

I'm running ME but both my daughter and son run XP. What
would I need to get into their PCs?

Thank you.

Remote Control Software

Bearing in mind that I've never used this....
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...dclientdl.mspx
should help, as it gives you (using ME) the ability to access a Windows XP
Pro machine - but I don't think it works with HP Home

With RealVNC, you need to load the software into the host PC's (your
offsprings') and tehn arrange for them to let you know their external IP
address at the time they need assistance - they will also have to enable
ports 5800, 5900, and 5500 on any NAT router that they may be using. (If I
need to get into my machine at home from a client, I can do so easily, using
RealVNC, and NoIP dynamic DNS, which allows me to use a normal URL-type link
to get to the box, rather than actually having to discover the IP every
time)
Once loaded, RealVNC can sit in the background as a service - once you
connect to it, it downloads the client software to your machine as a Java
app, and runs from there. Very simple once you get used to it.

(Even simpler is to upgrade your box to XP, and use RA from thereg

Remote Control Software

Noel, thanks ever so much for the great info. Once again
I'm in awe of the knowledge you and others can share via
this Newsgroup.

I believe what I will do first, after verifying my
daughter's XP Pro computer can be setup for remote
assistance, is to download the msrdpcli.exe to my ME
computer from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...dclientdl.mspx.
I'll see if these configurations allow me to remotely
manipulate her computer. It will probably take a couple of
days but I will Ping you to let you know if the msrdpcli.exe
works.

The other great link you gave me
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/art.../wxprmass.html
says I can use
StartProgamsAccessoriesCommunicationsNetMeetin g on my ME
computer to access an XP's Remote Assistance. May also
check that out.

P.S. I know that one day I will need to upgrade to a
different OS, hopefully with new hardware, however I hate to
give up ME. Until I retired in 1996 all my computing needs
were handled by my staff personnel. Finally about 3 years
ago I purchased this computer. My first one, it being a
used HP Pavilion loaded with ME (no disks nor
documentation). After working out some of its halts,
restarts, etc with much help from lurking around this
Newsgroup and other forums it is now pretty solid and fast.
I really hate to give it up. I have used my daughter's XP
and think my ME is easier and faster to use. Probably
because XP is set up for multiple accounts and I admit I'm
much more familiar with ME.bg

Thanks again Noel for all your help.

Job says, "Aah, I love the smell of ME in the morning."
