display settings default to 16 colors ??Smc not responding

You're welcome!
If I read you right, then Sygate firewall is 'not responding' at all times -
in which case perhaps you should first read this......

You may already have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

report back with the results, and we'll see what we can see.

Thanks again i am now aware that it is a sygate file, and yes the message
is
there whether sygate is active (on line) or if I halt it (off line) for
defragging or installing I kill sygate as it interferes with workings.

Yes, I included the query as I wondered if it were relevent to the initial
problem.

It's good to have the colours back for the photo's many thanks!!

This would seem to be part of the Sygate firewall -as Mart suggested.
When the computer is running normally, does the SMC still appear as 'not
responding in the Task Manager? If so, then you may need to
uninstall/reinstall the firewall.Since Symantec bought Sygate last year,
it
appears that they have chopped off support for the consumer products at
the
knees - and there are no easily searchable knowledgebases to which I can
refer (I've never used Sygate firewall, so have no idea how good the Help
section within it is)
You may want to repost a fresh query, with a more appropriate Subject
header

display settings default to 16 colors ??Smc not responding

to all ME users with display problems.I had problems constantly with my
diplay changing for no apparent reason, I had reset the driver at least 5
times before evan that became a problem. It woudn't let me do it. i foud the
manufacturer's site and downloaded the driver from there and put the file on
my desktop so i could just click on the file and reinstall.I have the ME
edition the driver is nvidia unified driver. i just typed it in, found the
website and downloaded it from there. The whole file is now on my desktop,
ironically since i did this I haven't had a single problem with it. I'am
going to back it up on a disk thou just to be safe and always look for
updated versions. hope this helps!

Are you reporting two faults?

"Colour" issues and/or "Smc not responding" issues?

If "Colour" issues, did you try Noel's recommendations? :-

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

What were the results? (more details please)
N.B. You *might* need special drivers (originally supplied with the
computer) which may be on a separate CD or floppy disks. Consult your User
Manual.

If you a reporting the "Smc not responding" problem, then it sounds like you
*may* have Sygate's firewall running on your PC. It appears that (according
to Google searches) there may be issues with this utility and it may not be
fully compatible with WinMe. The short term solution seems to be to
uninstall SMC to see if that fixes the problem and then review your options.

Mart
