Corrupted directories
 

Help Please;
I have been using Winrar 3.2 trial version to unpack some
downloaded files and successfully for the past 8 weeks. But
suddenly both the Winrar directory and the directory containing
all my files unpacked with Winrar have become corrupted! The
nature of the corruption is directory names looking like
this "@$@$_¶¸$.LC" and obviously not accessible.
Question is - is this the cause of a virus, if so
which one. Or is it a problem with Winrar.

It's unlikely to be a virus because it would affect other=20
areas of the system instead of just that obscure Zip=20
program.

I would remove the program by using its uninstall feature=20
or Add/Remove Programs, and then reinstall it - preferably=20
from a new download of the program.

I don't/have never used a trial version so I don't know if this will help, I use is
v3.3. If you can't get WinRAR to run then this is moot.
WinRAR has a repair archive feature, I've never had to use it but you may want to
try it.
WinRAR also has command line mode you could try.

Why not contact them and see if they will help. Mention you're situation and
possibly so they do not lose a potential customer they will help.

I'm glad to hear it may not be a virus but I forgot to
mention in my origonal posting that I had this occur before,
about 3 months ago, when it corrupted about 50% of the
directories on my hard drive - including my windows directory.
I subsequently ran fdisk and did a complete reinstall. I'm
assuming it's the same cause but how come I didn't get rid
of it with fdisk?

Thanks for the advice Brian. It never occurred to me that
they may help a trial user! I'll try that avenue out. As
for the repair archive feature; well it may work if Winrar
recognised the files in the first place (see my earlier
post), which is the part I don't understand. Every single
file that I used Winrar to create - no matter what directory
it was in or when I created it - has got turned into
gibberish! I'm going for a faulty Winrar version and will
look towards getting Ver3.3 as nobody seems to be reporting
any problems with that sofar.
