Scandisk/Defrag

When I attempt to do a Defrag on secondary drive D:\ (not C:\) I get a
message saying that I need to execute Scandisk first, which I do.
However, when Scandisk gets to about 2/3 of the way it stops and if I start
it again, it stops at the same place.
How do I get to complete Scandisk and\or fix the inherent problem.
Thanking you in anticipation
PS I use Window ME

You *may* be seeing the early signs of a failing hard drive. Try running
Scandisk in Real Mode DOS.

Boot using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk and at the A:\ prompt, type:
scandisk d: (Note the syntax - space between k and d followed by a colon)
Then press return.

If it shows errors, do not let it 'fix' them or do a Surface Test until you
have backed up your data - you may need professional assistance if you're
not sure how to copy or recover your data files.

However, if you are prepared to lose data, then let it repair errors and do
the surface scan.

Hopefully - and with a bit of luck g - it may even fix the problem.

Good luck

Mart

Boot into Safe Mode and run from there.

You're welcome Emmesse - and thanks for the feedback and I therefore trust
that your drive has recovered successfully without any failure or loss of
data.
