Main Display Adapter

Hello, I have a Win98 installed together with WinXP; and its display doesnt work correctly- the 640x480x16 thing, even with the correct drivers installed (I had a Riva Vanta 16 MB, then ATI RADEON 7000 - same problem with both videocards). The troubleshooter says 'This Driver would work, but you have to fix your Main Display Adapter first - what does 'Main' Display Adapter stand for?!? It all works fine in WinXP...

Brian A. July 17th 05 05:59 PM

This is a dual boot with 98 on one partition (volume) and XP on another,
correct? If so, you're best starting from scratch on the video adapter for the
98.
Boot the 98 machine to Safe Mode.
Remove any/all devices listed under Display Adapter.
Close out and reboot.
Windows will redetect the device, select to search and point the wizard to the
HD or CD drive directory where you have the drivers located to install.

If you have the same problem with both cards and the system is now referring
to a 'main' adapter then I suspect that you have a motherboard adapter that
you have disabled and the system is still detecting it. This will cause it
to interfere with the plug-in video adapter, and can confuse diagnostic or
installation software. Look hard in BIOS and the motherboard documentation
to see if there is some more definite way to disable the on-board adapter.

I'm glad that you obviously understand the problem, but I didn't find a way to do what you tell me. The Win98 and WinXP are installed just as you supposed. Actually I can't run my Windows 98 in safe mode - the boot menu seems to be functional only for WinXP, and runs Win98 only in normal mode. All I can find in the control panel of Win98 is the device manager, where I removed the display driver and installed some Standard Display Driver (the very first thing in the list with many many brands of videocards). I tried to install the drivers for my videocard from its own setup.exe, and then it says that my videocard isnt compatible - it doesn't recognize. So hope you tell me the exact way to fix the 'main' display adapter - when I open the display properties tab it says, that the 'Standard' Display Driver is OK, but the problem is in the 'main' display adapter.

P.S. I had problems with all of the hardware in Win98 - it is all found very difficultly by the system

When the correct screen resolution (screen area) or the right number of
colors are not available choices in display properties, settings tab, then
it is a good bet you do not have the right driver installed for your display
adapter. The display adapter in your PC is either a video card or a display
chipset on the motherboard.

If you received a CD or floppy disks with drivers along with your PC, see if
they contain a display adapter driver and install it using: control panel,
system, device manager, display adapter.

If you know what display adapter your PC has but you have no disks, use
www.google.com to track down the correct driver on the internet.

If you do not know what display adapter your PC uses, you can go to a MS-DOS
prompt and type: Debug and hit enter. The screen will display a
flashing prompt next to a - sign. Type: DC000:35 (DC000:50 may also work)
and hit enter. The name and possibly model of your display adapter should
appear on the right hand side of the screen. To quit Debug, type Q and hit
enter. If Debug is not helpful, you can try this program: Advanced PCI
Info, available at: http://www.upsystems.com.ua/support/alexmina/ If all
else fails, you will have to remove the computer case. Look at where the
monitor plugs into the back of the case and then check that location inside
the case. If there is a card there, you obviously have a video card and if
not, you have on board graphics. Write down any information displayed on
either the card or the chipset on the motherboard. Then use www.google.com
to search for the information. Do not include all the data you found in one
search message--search on each piece individually. If you include all the
information at once, you might not get a hit.

I have found that a video card will generally have to be removed in order to
see the information. Be careful of static electricity as it can fry
components. Before touching anything in the computer case (the cord is
unplugged, right?), ground yourself to the case by touching it. Don't work
on carpeting since shuffling your feet on it can generate static electricity
after you grounded yourself. Remove the one screw that holds the card in
place and using a rocking motion (left to right and back), pull the card
straight out.

Why can't you boot to 98 Safe mode? Isn't 98 a choice in the boot menu?

2 ways to boot to Safe Mode in a dual/multi boot:

1) In 98 click Start Run, type in: msconfig and press Enter.
Under the General tab click the Advanced button.
Place a check next to "Enable startup menu".
Click Apply Ok and reboot.
At the boot menu select 98 and it should boot to 98's startup menu where you
selsct Safe Mode.
*Note: Remember to go back and uncheck it when you're done so it doesn't boot
to the startup menu everytime you boot 98.

2) After re/booting to the boot menu select 98 and immediately press/hold down
the shift key until you get the 98 startup menu.

The 2) thing with the shift worked. Now I don't exactly understand what to remove to be able to start from scratch. In the Device Manager I didn't even find the Display thing, as I had already removed the display driver while in normal mode. Is that what I have to remove?

P.S.
Eh, mr Badour and mr Richards, I know exactly what my motherboard features are, and what exactly model of videocard I have installed on it. I think I wouldn't be posting here if I didn't yet know exactly what I have and have not, right?

I'm going to have to test that myself with the Shift key. Don't know where my
mind was at the moment, but that should have been: press/hold down the CTRL
key.

If display/video is not present then nothing is installed. Otherwise if it was
present with devices and duplicates showing, you would remove any/all devices
showing including the duplicates.

Reboot and Windows should redetect the device for installation.

Do you by any chance have Plug n Play disabled in the BIOS?
