Windows Me startup problems
I can't get Windows Me to startup. I get the startup menu with the choices
for 1-normal, 2-logged, 3-safe mode, 4-step by step. It says there's a registry configuration error and to scanreg to correct this error. How can I do this? I have a recovery disc, but when i tried to run that, it said that the recovery disc would erase all the information on the harddrive, which I can't afford to have happen. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem without going to a professional? Thanks for your assistance. |
Have you tried booting to Safe Mode? If not try so before continuing.
If you are still unable to boot Win Me then dig out your Win Me boot floppy (EBD), put it in the floppy drive, and boot to DOS. Choose either option 2 or 3 from the Menu. At the DOS prompt enter SCANREG and click Enter and let scanreg run and check the registry for errors. When finished remove the floppy and see if you now boot into Win Me. If you are still unable to boot into Win Me use the boot floppy again and boot to a DOS prompt but this time enter SCANREG /RESTORE and click Enter and choose the most recent of the five dates offered that predates your problems and scanreg will restore a backed up copy of the registry from that date. Remove the floppy and you should now be able to boot into Win Me. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP zeotch wrote: I can't get Windows Me to startup. ......and if you don't have (for some reason) an Me boot disk, you can
download one from www.bootdisk.com . (realizing, of course, that this would mean using someone else's computer). Heirloom, old and tired and sore "Mike M" wrote in message ... Actually, you are both correct. Had to teach a safety class this past

Thanks, your advice seemed to work. Got it up and running again.
Thankfully, I have two computers. Thanks again. "Mike M" wrote: Have you tried booting to Safe Mode? If not try so before continuing.
