If you have a system restore checkpoint dated May 2005 and the PC has been
used since then rather than sitting switched off, this could suggest that
system restore is fubared and my advice would be to reset system restore
and clear the archive.

To reset system resto
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check "Disable
System Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will flush you
restore folder and erase all checkpoints, then,
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable
System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should now
automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart.
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder,
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore
slider to your preferred setting. A figure of 2-300MB is normally more
than adequate for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to
be available although increasing this to perhaps 400-500MB for a few days
during periods of large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

Finally I would suggest that you carry out the following quick test to
confirm that all is now in order.
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file.
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?

It's imperative that you delete files that old, one should not restore back
more than a week or two (say a week if you use it daily, two if you don't!).

No. System Restore is there for a very good reason. A great many problems
that would otherwise require considerable expertise and/or much work to
recover from, may be resolved in a couple of minutes by restoring to the
last checkpoint. Just set the allocated space to about 200-500MB. A lot of
arrogant rubbish is spouted about Win ME and System Restore by people who
should just stick with 98 and are really just trying to ring their own bell,
like Windows user versions of Linux trolls.

No. I mean create a manual checkpoint. That is open system restore
[Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools], click create a restore
point and follow the prompts.

The shortcut has to be in an area monitored by system restore and the
desktop is the easiest accessed of such locations but if you want to use
another location so be it.

I use a windows shell

As does everyone, for most it is called Windows Explorer although some
still use progman.

I never work in desktop except to dial up.

What does dial up have to do with the shell or gui? Do you mean that you
are using VNC or something similar to access the Win Me system remotely?
