Windows ME not assigning a letter to a removable USB disk

Hope somebody can help. I have two removable USB mass storage devices
installed, one is my Fuji digital camera and one is an Oracom MP3 player.
They have both worked perfectly well until recently. Unfortunately I cannot
identify exactly when they stopped working correctly. When I connect either
of these items, via USB, they are not assigned a letter. If I look in My
Computer they do not exist. They do exist under Device Manager. If, under
Device Manager, I manually assign a letter when the computer restarts to
accept the changes, the manually assigned letters are active and the devices
are visible under My Computer. Unfortunately, it only appears temporary as
when I reboot my computer and re-connect the USB devices they, again, are
not assigned a letter. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the
software, including drivers, associated with both the camera and the MP3
player, with no effect.

Try this
Power down
Physically unplug all USB Devices
Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL USB Devices and Controllers
Remove ALL error-flagged devices
Reboot to Normal Mode
Plug in USB devices one at a time, and get each recognised before proceeding
to the next

See if that cures it

Sorry, didn't work. One thing I have now noticed is that if I power the PC
up with the device connected it is assigned a letter. If I power up without
the device connected and then connect it, it is not assigned a letter.

If you are not already doing so, try connecting via a 'powered hub'. It may
cost 'a few bob', but if successful it may be money well spent, plus it will
give you a few more USB ports to expand to, anyway g
