Pop up blocker
 

Hi,

I am currently using the Google toolbar for blocking pop ups but recently
there's quite a lot not blocked and are poping up and asking to chnge my home
page. Although I am well protected against this it is getting very annoying.
Can anyone advise me if there is a better free blocker than Google?

Use Firefox. It's pop up blocker works rather well. Uninstall all other
crap toolbars and your system will love you. Really, it will.
Opera has a built in pop up blocker if you don't like Firefox.
Or better yet ... nevermind. I was going to suggest moving up to a
modern day OS as support for Win ME/98 is dwindling.

Thanks for the advice Mow, I think I'll give firefox a go...

As for upgrading.... not yet, I really like ME. So what's the deal now... do
Microsoft expect everyone to upgrade to 2K/XP because no more support is
going to be given on 9x?

I suppose they have got to make their money some how. g

In which case you will really like XP since it loads much faster than
older/legacy Win9x systems such as Win Me. g However for many with
somewhat older hardware Win Me will often continue to be the best option.

Hi Mike,

I was just going on feedback from people who use XP. There has been many
times when someone has used my PC at home and commented on how fast it starts
up. I have said to them what OS do you use and they said XP and takes a lot
longer to startup. Also, I'm using Win 2K SP4 on a Compaq Evo, Pentium 4,
1.70 Ghz now at work and this PC takes about 1 and half mins just to get to
the login screen.

However, your the expert Mike and I'm sure you have a lot more experience
and have seen many more PC's startup than me.

Craig,

Win Me is undoubtedly quicker than 98SE and Win2K to load and I know that
fast start up was one of Microsoft's objectives when developing Win Me.
XP also starts up very quickly, even quicker than Win Me, but if the
system only has limited RAM XP can be a real dog. So whilst Win Me can
boot quickly and run happily with 64MB and upwards of RAM (32MB is a bit
slow), XP really seems to need 512MB to start quickly and if run on
systems with 128MB or 256MB can be very slow indeed to start up.

are still using Windows 98 and Windows Millenium (ME). Is it possible to protect
98 and ME from rootkits? The response is not encouraging:


Simple to answer - No it is not possible. But of course, that is not 100% true.
I'll try to explain.

Unlike the NT kernel, Windows 98, ME (95 too) implements no security. There is nothing
like process protection, or even kernel protection. Your application that runs in usermode
can directly access kernel structures and code.

That's why these 9x and ME systems crash a lot. They are unstable because, if there is
a bug in any userland application, it may damage other processes or even kernel memory,
directly without any special code.

With a sufficient amount of memory installed, XP boots very quickly. I'm
not pushing anyone to buy hardware or software. But be aware that older,
unsupported OS' are a security risk. And we all know the nature of
the internet today. Some argue that Win 9x can be sufficiently
protected, in fact, better than NTFS ( Win 2k, XP ). I disagree.
If you can hold out, get a new system next year that comes with Vista
installed. ;)

Thanks for the info. At the moment I'm happy with the setup I've got and
can't remember the last time I found any Spyware or Virus on this PC. I am
confident that I'm well protected from the nasties from the net.

I see this statement *a lot* but I find that my PC is opposite. Very rare
when something doesn't work or I get a crash.

Also, when Microsoft stop supporting ME will these ME forums still be here?

I agree with you and cannot accept Mow's statement "That's why these 9x
and ME systems crash a lot." since it is so far from the truth and the
statement about rootkits he quotes is IMO of almost no relevance
whatsoever to Win 9x systems however highly esteemed the source might be.

As to your question about how long these newsgroups will survive after end
June 2006, I have no idea but suspect that Microsoft might attempt some
(overdue) consolidation of the various Win 9x newsgroups however that is
far from easy given the nature of Usenet where a "dead" newsgroup can
quite easily be resurrected but at least the newsgroups carried on the
Microsoft servers could be reduced.
