Screen Goes Blank

This does not happen every time, but I would like to correct, if
possible.

Within a few minutes of PC startup the screen will go blank. No keys
will correct this so I press the RESTART button. 98SE reloads, with
no problems, and the problem doesn't reoccur.

Any ideas as to what might be causing this?

Thanks for any info.

Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop and choose Properties
Choose the "Screen Saver" tab

You will see two Settings buttons. In the panel titled
"Energy saving features of monitor", click the Settings button.

Set the "Turn off monitor" scroll-box setting to "Never"

Click OK, twice

Also, do not turn off the hard drives because it causes too much wear and
tear on them in my opinion. My 4.3 gig. Western Digital hard drive still
works and I almost never used the turn off hard drive feature. I only used
it when I was a novice and did not know any better. :

This is an area of interest, of mine. Frequency of spinning up and spinning
down a hd used to be a matter of argument because the platter spindle
bearing would (lose*) a tiny amount of lubricant, (* lube would travel to a
part of the spindle where it would no longer be redistributed .....EVER!,
with each spin-up and spin-down). This is no longer strictly the case with
newer/recent hd's that have "liquid bearings."

Powering up and powering down is still largely a matter of common sense
balanced against your personal working habits, i.e. if you're only leaving
your PC for an hour or two, (and other people would spot it, if it caught
fire!), leave it running - with power saving settings that do not spin down
the hd and do not put other parts in standby or power down mode, (to reduce
the stresses experienced by de/re-energizing electronic components, not to
mention mechanical parts such as hd platter spindle and the voice coil
actuator mechanism that carries the "flying" read/write heads in the hd).

If you're likely to be away from your PC for a couple of hours or more, and
in addition might not get back to it the same day, set power savings,
standby, etc. accordingly !

regards, Richard

Thanks, this makes sense, but... I had 'after 1 hour' selected there,
and the computer had been on for only about 5 minutes. I have made
the recommended change and will see if it corrects.
