Reinstalling Windows in a new folder
Hi, I'm about to start the process of reinstalling Windows
in a different folder because I keep getting Explorer.exe errors. I just have a few questions to ask. 1) My Windows folder is currently on the C: drive and my personal files are on the D: drive (two separate drives). If I was to reinstall Windows on the D: drive you it then be safe to delete it from the C: drive? 2) Because all my past work is on my D: drive, I don't really want to install Windows there because if my explorer.exe problem ever arises again then I don't want to format that drive etc. So is it possible to reinstall on the D: drive, delete the version on the C: and then reinstall on the C: drive? There is no need to involve D: drive. You can either install to a new
folder on C: drive, format the C: partition or delete the Windows folder from DOS. The thing is I only have 100mb free on the C: if not less.
That's why I was suggesting moving Windows to the D: drive because there a couple of GB space for it. The C: is pretty tight for space. But now you have suggested deleting the C:\Windows folder from DOS and then reinstalling. I'm a little nervous about this so can I just confirm that if I want to reinstall Windows on my C: drive, then I reboot the PC and with my startup floppy disc. Type C: and then "Deltree Windows" (with a space between the two words). Then what happens? Do I restart the PC but leave the Windows 98CD in the CD-drive and let that reinstall? Thanks. PS, at the moment my system.ini file has shell=winfile.exe instead of explorer.exe, should I change this before I reinstall or is that not a problem? Type: C: **and hit enter.** At the C: prompt, type: Deltree
windows **and hit enter.** See my instructions on installing W98 so you will know how to tell what letter was assigned to the CDRom drive. After Windows is deleted, type: E: (or whatever letter is assigned to the CDRom drive) and hit enter. Then follow my instructions. System.ini is in the Windows folder which you will delete. I load the PC with the Win98 startup disk, choose load PC with CD support and type C: and then deltree windows and then an error message comes up saying I can either retry,abort or fail. Reinstalling Windows READ THIS
I forgot that it worked a little differently when using a floppy disk--my
apologies. If it is not there, add deltree.exe to your W98 floppy start up disk. Boot and at the A: prompt, type: deltree C:\windows and hit enter. Follow the on screen prompts.
