Visual Basic Scripting Support
 

I have reinstalled WinME on a old computer because of a disk crash. However,
I cannor run Windows update becasue I consistently get a message telling me
that I need to download Visula Basic Scripting Support (avaialble locally).
When I try to download, it fails. I looked at the Microsoft website and
found that I could coorect the situation by downloading scr56en.exe (on page
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/303107 . However, if try to dowload this
file, it says me the download is unavailable.

What can I do ?

Thank you for your promt reply. I got it.
But, incidentally, the problem solved it-self spontaneously. While WU
insisted it could not find the programme, it out of sudden found it AFTER I
activated the Windows Logon so that there was a registered user... This was
amazing because the computer had a normal Internet access without that and
Win98/ME does not require that users start a session. Anyway, it works now.

You're welcome Paul. Although in the end you didn't need the link's copy of
scr56en.exe, I'm glad you've got the issue sorted out. Odd that MS appear to
have pulled it - but it seems that they are gradually pulling Win9x and
other early stuff from their download (support?) site. Sign of the times!

Mart,

Microsoft most helpfully have removed most if not all of the Win9x tags
used to help filter KB pages when searching. For example pages applicable
to Win Me used to contain the tag
Technology: kbWinME kbWinMEsearch
The absence of these tags makes finding relevant articles a lot harder.

I'd rather do without WSH. Is Windows Update "needing" this now?

The last thing I'd want is a bunch of extra malwarable file types.

It seems that all older versions of the scripting engine, regardless of
the OS for which they were intended, have been removed from the download
centre following the release of v5.7 of the scripting engine. This
appears to me to be yet another short-sighted action by Microsoft whereby
the force users to upgrade to 5.7 and just tough luck for those with
operating systems now supported by the new version.

and sadly, perhaps they are losing sight of their original customers too,
judging by the take-up of (retail) Vista. Not particularly brilliant,
according to press reports. My PC magazines seem to be sniffing around Linux
and other OS's as a credible alternatives more recently.

As for Microsoft losing sight of their original customers I suspect that
it is more and more caring not one jot about anyone other than their major
accounts. In my view Microsoft long ago gave up on their home and soho
users preferring that these users solely deal with the big OEMs. Not that
the OEMs care either once they've shifted their box. I'm not sure I'll be
around long enough to see it but feel that Microsoft is already on a
downward slope which is getting steeper and steeper. The last thing I
want to see is Web 2.0 and the likes of Google take over and I for one
want to retain the applications I use on my systems rather than do
everything via a browser which probably means that some form of 'nix is
perhaps going to be the only way forward - either that or get a Mac vbg.

BTW I reported the broken download link in KB303107. Others are also
complaining about the withdrawal of Windows Scripting 5.6 and asking why
they are being forced to install v5.7 if 5.6 gets broken for any reason.
