video card troubles - 2nd try
I tried posting this yesterday, but for some reason it didn't wind up in the
list of discussions. Hopefully, this time it will work. I have a Dell Optiplex running Windows 98, and I recently installed Windows in an attempt to get rid of extraneous programs that I couldn't seem to delete. When I bought the computer, Dell offered a package deal that included several already installed options, such as network and video cards, so I didn't install these things from CDs, though I do have backup disks for them. My main problem at the moment is that I cannot seem to get the computer to install the proper driver for the video card. I have tried downloading an Intel 810 from the Dell site, but the installation led me in circles, so that every time I restarted my computer I was asked to install again, and the display did not change from the basics, though the other options were (tantalizingly) there. Yesterday, I discovered that I had backup disks for the Intel 810, and I tried to install this morning from the 9 (9!) of them. After the 9th disk, I got the following error message: A software error occured. Please report this to Technical Support: Couldn't load DLL C:\WINDOWS\Temp\Intel810\Support\shpshftr.dll. Received error value -1. Then I tried to use the Advanced Settings under Control Panel\Display to locate the new driver, and I thought I was getting somewhere, but the computer came up with an error that a particular file could not be found on "disk 1." I'm not thrilled about attempting to find this on each of the 9 disks. Do you have any advice for me here? Should I attempt to remove whatever I have installed and start from scratch? Would it be better to get the driver from a download or from my backup disks? And, on an unrelated note, what would you suggest I do for virus protection for this old piece of junk? Thank you for reading this long post! |

What model Optiplex? Do you have a disk with a display adapter driver?
