What's the best free pdf to text or rtf converter?

Can't convert with free version of Foxit Reader, works well to read
the new format pdf's, but does not convert to text

free-pdf-to-word-converter.exe 588KB

Free PDF to RTF Converter 1.5 seems to reorganize the simplest of
pdf's For example a numbered list of text ends up with all the
numbers AFTER each entry!

I think I tried
pdf2Wordsetup.exe 1,103KB
and it was worse

So, what free pdf to text, or to doc or to rtf works the best on
Win98FE?

Hm,, waited to see if anyone could help,, here's what I found when I
looked [for several years].

Regretfully, I never found any one program, script or other, which
could convert all PDFs nor to my satisfaction. If running a web server,
there are a few which might do a functional convert, though that seems
to take some extra scripting and basic server installations to work at
all, much less, well. The stumbling blocks may be the myriad of formats
and inclusions which might be involved, as well as any protections that
may have been applied.

Hopefully someone else has other to offer as I still have a few dozen
government PDFs to convert.

Yeah, I can relate. The key aspect being "sometimes". I got so
frustrated, I cut and pasted from PDF to Word for some of the US Code on
the site, and even then it took manual formatting... so I still have
several hundred megs of docs NOT converted to publishable html and
several hundred more as un-modified PDFs.

Doesn't Adobe 8, which runs on the WinXP, have the ability to scoop,
copy, and paste into a Word .doc?

As I recall, the weird equations don't transfer but most of the text
does.

I just hate using the WinXP so much that I limp along and make do. I
have actually, Print Screen and pasted onto Paint .bmp for some
things.

I have had nothing but trouble doing this.

Recently I have ran into several times a problem with
converted documents having spaces between letters in words
and multiple spaces between words.

Everything I tried gave the same result.

I think, but do not know for sure, that the problem arises
from documents that were originally prepared with right
adjusted margins and the spaces reflect the word processor
evenly arranging the letters across the line.

I purchased PDF converter from http://www.galcott.com/pd.htm
and reported the bug. The program specs included Win 98.
First the developer claimed no bug. Then it admitted the bug
and sent me a fix. The fix didn't work, and then it claimed
that bug could not be fixed in Win 98.

Needless to say, I would no recommend either the program or
the source.
