Excel Error
I have Office 97 running on a windows me machine. Been using the Excel for
months on this machine with no problems. Suddenly started receiving "excel has caused an error in excel.exe. if you continue to have problems please restart your computer" error out of nowhere. Error comes up when I try to save a file - closing the program and losing all the work. Software works fine until I try to save. Have tried to save in multiple file formats and locations - to no avail. I reinstalled excel from the office cd. No help. Same message. Any ideas???? Thanks. |
Have you tried the Knowledge Base? There were some 20 issues raised when
simply searching for 'excel save' as keywords, maybe something there might help. Perhaps a good starting point would be "How to troubleshoot errors when you save Excel files" http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;271513 Good luck Mart "canna" wrote in message ... I'm using Excel 97 SR1 that came with my Office 97 CD.

One has to wonder what you're doing running Excel 97 on a Windows Millennium
system - and can only assume that the problem may be related to the probability that the system you were originally supplied with was Win98-based, (probably First edition) and that you have since upgraded to ME...... Have you recently installed any updates from Windows Updates or from Office Updates??? Unfortunately both Office 97 and Win ME are no longer in full support from MS - and I can find no references to your exact error message at MS - so it may be that you are SOL without some heavy-hitter backing....... That said - go to Windows Updates, and make sure that you have installed ALL the 'Critical' updates, and any others that relate to Office - then go to the Office site (office.microsoft.com) and see what's available there. I've copied this response to a specialist Excel newsgroup - please respond directly to any answers you may get from there. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "canna" wrote in message ... Thanks Noel,
One has to wonder what you're doing running Excel 97 on a Windows Millennium system I refuse to pay the price for a later version as I don't really use it that often. My PC was bought with ME already installed and has not had any other operating system installed. I then installed Office 97 at a later date. I think it has got to be something I've installed as it worked fine the last time I used it, about 6 months ago. (Just shows how much I use Excel). I'll try installing all the latest updates as you suggested. Cheers. canna, you wrote earlier :-
I reinstalled excel from the office cd. No help. Same message. Did you 'over-install' or delete (remove) your copy of Excel 97 first? Try deleting (removing) and then re-boot and clean-install Excel 97 (or Office 97 if necessary) An over-install may not be 'fixing' the issue - e.g. a corrupted registry key or file not being overwritten. BTW - If you have to delete (remove) the program(s), you *shouldn't* lose any data, (but back-up your documents anyway!!) only personalised settings (e.g. printer or font settings, templates, etc.) which you may have made. Mart, thanks for your reply.
Yes I did over install. I've just done as you said and completly removed everything and install it again. And it's only worked like a charm, problem fixed. Thanks mate. You're welcome canna. Good to hear that it's fixed - it may have been
regarded as a sledge-hammer to crack a nut, but at least it was quick and painless g and thanks for the feedback - it's appreciated. Mart "canna" wrote in message ... Mart, thanks for your reply.
