You don't have to install Windows 98 to upgrade to Windows XP, just do a
clean install of XP. Boot the computer with the Windows XP upgrade cd
and when the XP Setup program inspects the drive it will inform you that
it found no previous operating system to upgrade and it will then ask
you for a proof of ownership of a previous qualifying Windows version,
you will be asked to insert your previous Windows in the CD drive. Once
the setup program is satisfied that you own a qualifying Windows version
it will proceed to install XP cleanly. Not only will this be faster
than first installing Windows 98, it will also give you a better
installation as the installation won't have to deal with Windows 98
detritus.

Ok, fine. A new hard drive. Continue.

it had windows 98 on it,

Since when does a new hard drive come from the factory or the retailer
with windows 98 installed on it?

then upgraded to XP

So you "upgraded to XP", which (the way I read that) you installed XP on
the new drive.

I am having to reinstall 98 first

You just said that you upgraded (past tense) to XP.

and don't have the product code, I have them for xp,

But you said that

a) you bought a new hard drive
b) this new hard drive had (past tense) windows 98 on it
c) you then upgraded to XP
d) you now need to re-install 98, so you can re-install XP

What kind of convoluted story line is all this?

There is no upgrade path from Windows ME to Windows 2000 and upgrades
from W9x to Windows 2000 are often problematic, these operating systems
usually upgrade better to Windows XP than they do to Windows 2000.

And what's with the follow-up to
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup? The OP said nothing
about wanting to install Vista so why bring an OT post there?

I have a few of those, and I also have several years of MSDN cd's from
the 1998 - 2003 time frame, which includes all versions of win-95 and

I also have a few hundred win-98g and se product keys (that have never

And BTW, I removed your assinine follow-up group.
Why the hell did you do that?

Well Tanicca. I can't quite figure out where you're posting from (which
city or country).

I would recommend that you post your quesion to an XP newsgroup.

I suggest

microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
microsoft.public.windowsxp.help_and_support

They are very helpful and they just enjoy answering questions like yours
and I have no doubt they will provide you with a product key.

Also try the XP forums at msfn.org. They also deal with lots of product
key questions and issues and just love to talk about them. You'll
probably get about 5 or 10 responses there.

From that I can tell, that's the MS part number for a Windows 98 first
edition upgrade CD.

I have about 4 others codes, but the closest is X03-30200

That also appears to be a Win-98 first edition upgrade CD.

In order to use an upgrade CD, you must have something already on the
hard drive of the system to make the CD think that some older version of
windows is on the drive (like windows 3.x). I suppose that the
re-install should also work.

Do you know if any of the Windows Upgrade Codes came separate
from the Box or Book?

For one thing, when windows asks for a product key, the key will be in
the form of a bunch of letters and numbers like this:

JH2JK - M8TKW - JH4GD - 7763W - 7JYQ6

5 groups of 5 characters per group.

Second, windows-98 first edition sucks really bad, and if you're going
to spend time dicking around with installing or re-installing windows
98, I strongly suggest you do it with second edition.

Do you know how to download a torrent?

If so, I can give you a link to a win-98 second edition torrent.

PS: The product keys I gave in my previous post are for second edition.

These are supposed to be for first edition upgrade cd. Again, tell me
if they don't work:

HVYD6 - 3778J - PD3CK - HGVYB - RM24B
F73WT - WHD3J - CD4VR - 2GWKD - T38YD
VD4WG - Y998T - 3MGWX - GPW2Q - 3QVC8
DKRBQ - TXYCX - 6K4GD - 4CPJ7 - C6B26
FT9CH - XVXW7 - 7BFCM - RPR49 - VDHYD
PW3DW - PC9D8 - Q7VMQ - 8YTMY - RTR9G
M4G3G - 77CGM - 9FY8T - PMWBC - JJYDM

Or try these:

CCW67 - GWQY3 - 9TG6G - 3P7YP - 728JX
CQKDD - TJC3J - 3Y7YJ - 8CG9M - 22MFF
G2FGT - 6HYRW - X2W2C - RT7HW - RF7WX

product codes

My part no is X03-30206

From that I can tell, that's the MS part number for a Windows 98 first
edition upgrade CD.

I have about 4 others codes, but the closest is X03-30200

That also appears to be a Win-98 first edition upgrade CD.

In order to use an upgrade CD, you must have something already on the
hard drive of the system to make the CD think that some older version of
windows is on the drive (like windows 3.x). I suppose that the
re-install should also work.

Do you know if any of the Windows Upgrade Codes came separate
from the Box or Book?
