Standby mode trouble

Using Win98 SE all updates on 256Mb ram. 8Gb HD. gigabyte ga-bx2000 MB with
4440BX agpset.

I no longer want to use the standby mode after this hassle, I just want
things as they were before the following happened.

I tried to shut down into 'standby mode' via START-SHUT DOWN and the machine
hung. When rebooted the 'standby' item had been removed from the options in
start-shut down box. Using the motherboard book I tried to reinstate the
standby mode firstly by inserting win98 disk and typing E:\setup /p j which
seemed to perform the steps of a normal reinstall so I aborted it.

Second option is as follows;
From Device Manager-System Devices-Plug & Play BIOS select driver (Bios.vxd)
then update. Update wizard-'display a list' 'show all hardware'-select
'Advance configuration and power interface ACPI BIOS'- next. Update warning
click yes. Update Device Driver Wizard then shows 'Advanced Config etc'
Location C:\windows\inf\machine.inf, I then did NEXT & FINISH.
When rebooted the display has changed size/colour mode and a 'Found New
Hardware' item crops up for a 'Composite Power Source' the Win98 cd-rom is
requested but everything hangs when OK is clicked. I can only reboot into
safe mode which automatically brings up the 'Display Properties' box, when
ok is clicked the message 'At this time display properties are
limited.........next time you restart the display will be 480 x 640 x 16
col, YES to restart with new settings or NO to save orig config. No,
continues to load safemode as normal.

There seems nothing I can do in safe mode to enable me to reboot as normal,
the Plug & Play BIOS item in Device Manager-System Devices is no longer
present and has been replaced by 'Plug & Play BIOS software device
enumerator' although there is another entry for 'Advance configuration and
power interface ACPI BIOS' which seems to have the drivers loaded by
machine.inf ie ACPI.sys, ntkern.vxd, powerd.vxd, power,drv and pci.vxd. I
can't be 100% sure if this item was there before but I'm sure this was
within the Plug and Play bios setting not an item of its own.

I'm not after the standby mode facility any more, I just want to undo what
I've done but I have no idea how to accomplish this. As a possible cause my
display driver/s may be to blame, I'm using a creative labs 3d blaster
fx5200 which insists on having a default monitor entry even when a specific
monitor is already identified. During one attempt at booting I got a display
driver illegal operation warning.

Many Thanks for any suggestions
