How to view a file .avi with Irfanview that asks for H264 on Win98
 

I've got Irfanview 4.25 that views almost EVERYTHING, except when I
went to view a download archive from security camaeras, .avi, it asks
me to go to
http://www.fourcc.org/indexcod.html
and get the H264 codec

When I go to the site, it comes up with Vanguard beta, whose linkno
longer works, and with a H264 (unknown), which I downloaded.

I'm hesitant to install H264 (unknown), because nothing is working
like my other installs.

Should I install? Someone look at that codec and let me know if it's
ok, or better yet is there a better one? Or, is there a small program
that will simply allow me to view frame by frame, with good imaging
[like Irfanview]?


PS: Same thing came up on my WinXP, so I went to the site (since it
recognized the WinXP) it gave me the codec packet H260 - H269 and
downloaded some small piece, that when I went to install, tried to
'pirate' my whole machine to install numerous Delta software, and said
"Connect" then said this will take at most a minute. Four hours and
100+MB later I got the program. Installed it, only to have it say
can't install; must be SP3 ?!! [the machine cannot be upgraded to the
hardware necessary to go from SP2 to SP3] After all this, Irfanview
opened the .avi and apparently ran it, I knew what was on the archive;
BUT !! I keep getting a giant notice in the center that says Windows
can't run this file ??!! Say what, I'm watching it, what are you
talking about. Worst of all, the stupid notice keeps popping up afater
I click to erase it, over nad over.

Why don't you have the VLC media player yet?

I hear a lot of people talk about irfanview, and I probably have it on
my win-98 systems, but I never use it.

If Microsoft Photo-editor (my default app for opening jpg and gif files
from explorer) can't open any given jpg file (because the file is too
large), or if I have to perform some photo editing task, then I'll fire
up CorelDraw's photopaint.

But for audio or video files, VLC has been my default player for years.

If you want something more light-weight, then get MediaPlayer Classic.

Good question. Probably the best thing going for audio and video
files. Handles *many* more formats than the MS player.

image format you can think of.

Mozilla (without third party help, anyway).

But for audio or video files, VLC has been my default player for years.

2.0.6) plays h.264 according to
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.php?cat=video. I don't know how
they get around the proprietaryness.

Yea, well, I've got Coreldraw version 9, which is over 10 years old, and
when I created about a dozen win-98 machines for my office and home back
in 2005 I started with a single master win-98 installation that I
repeatedly cloned, and that master included the full MS Office 2000
Premium SR1 and Coreldraw 9 among other things. So I tend to treat
CorelDraw and Office 2k as an integral component of win-98. I think
that Office itself has some advanced photo-editing or viewing software
(that I don't use).

No argument, and it's also free. And the latest version (now up
to 2.0.6) plays h.264 - I don't know how they get around the
proprietaryness.

One argument I've heard is that the VLC effort is based (or hosted) in
France, and France doesn't recognize software patents as a form of
intellectual property.

I don't know if either claim is true.

Years ago, I installed VLC what a battle! first it was clunky to use,
second there was NO way to change the size of the view. Then I
discovered Sothink and Irfanview's extensions, which seemed to open
everything, plus I can change the size of the view.So I left VLC
sitting there.

Just now I opened the avi with VLC and sure enough, screen went to
small viewing size, but then went to total blackout, nothing. wait and
wait. Luckily, recovered without a reboot by hitting esc twice.
whew!

So, I'm still not excited about VLC. But you say it will work. ok.
I'll fiddle with it a bit.

couldn't figure out what to download. I have kernelex, but it asked me

Will VLC .avi viewer let me do frame by frame analyses? I've got a
view of a motorcycle that clearly shows 51 mph in our 5 mph location,
I need to document and confront the offender's kid. Else, this kid
could get killed in an accident on my property and let's guess whose
liable.

window and drag it around. That changes the size of VLC window. Works
the same in most other windows programs too.

Are you using VLC to view / edit (edit?) static images? JPEG, TIFF,
GIF, BMP?

What on earth gave you the idea that VLC was designed to do that?

Never would I think to use VLC for viewing / editing static bit-mapped
graphic images.

small viewing size

VLC opens video's in their native pixel size. If you think the viewing
window is small for what you're playing, it's because the video stream
has been encoded with a small image size. Look at the pixel size
(horizontal x vertical) of the video in question, and then compare that
with the size of your screen.

And like I said, just drag the corner of the VLC window to what-ever
size you want (even full-screen) and VLC will magnify the video image.

If you have ancient video hardware, a weak CPU, or a piddly amount of
installed RAM memory, then all bets are off for most types of software.

No machine running win-98 in this day and age should have anything less
than 8x AGP video card with 256 mb ram, 2 ghz P4 CPU, and 512 mb ram, or
otherwise be based on a motherboard older than 2005.

You can change the playback speed and slow it down. Not sure if it can
do frame-by-frame.

I think you can slow it down to something like 1/4 real-time.

yes found on the Win98 left there from years ago: vlc 0.8.6 and can't
change size of zcreen, corner dragging or just maximum.

I down'loaded something for the WinXP, 22MB and more recent than what
was on there by one subrev level 5 to 6. It does seem snappy and
'smooths' the image ok, but...I can't step frame by frame. I need to
stop on a frame SANPSHOT, step to next frame SNAPSHOT and can't do
that in VLC

Oh well....

That version is ancient.

But nonetheless, I don't recall any version of VLC (including that one)
not being able to dynamically resize the view-window when playing back a
video.

The most current version of VLC is 2.0.6.

but...I can't step frame by frame. I need to stop on a frame
SANPSHOT, step to next frame SNAPSHOT and can't do that in VLC

I have no idea what your problem is.

I searched my computer for a variety of .AVI files - some of which were
captured with a digital camera, some were captured with an IP camera
(Trendnet).

For all of them, when the video starts to play, I press the "E" key, and
the video immediately stops and the word "Next Frame" appears
transiently in the upper right-hand corner of the image. Every time I
press "E", the video advances a single frame and stops.
