Display adapter Trident TGUI 0440

Using Win98se and inseted a pci display card Trident TGUI 9440. When I boot
up, its says ' there is a problem with your display settings. The current
adapter type is incorrect or the current settings do not work with the
hardware. Click "ok' gives me the Display Properties Screen with only the
setting tag.

In the Display column; 1) Default monitor on Trident 9440 pci
and if you arrow down 2) Default monitor on Intel(e) 810e Chipset graphic

and the setting is at 640 x 480. And if I click "ok", it give shows Display
Properties (DP). which says

'At this time the DP settings are limited to trouble shooting..The next time
you restart the display will be set to 640 x 480 x 16 colours mode.......
After you restart successfully, you will be able to change your drivers or
setting....
Are you sure you want to contine? YES / NO

May I ask whats all these and how can I get this hp (which original comes
with the on board graphic ) to work properly. Many thanks in advance.

Think I spoke to soon. Sometimes, the whole screen will have only 1/2 colour,
presumably red/black but it still seems to work. Smetimes, it will get hang
and need to reboot. Sometimes it will not detect the usb modem upon reboot.
When I try to defrag it, it will hang at 85% mark. Did an virus scan using
nav2006 and yields nothing, so is spybot 1.4. I have run the manufacturer hdd
diagnostic tools and it passed all the test. This w98se installation was a
fairly new installation.
Any suggestions as how to reslve this interminnent problem, thanks

If you set the display adapter back to how it was before, do the problems
still occur? Note: it is the display adapter you are making changes with,
not the monitor.

Messed up colours usually indicates a problem with the monitor cable. Is it
firmly plugged in and are there no squashed pins?
