Slow performence
I have P4 2.8GHz with 1GB RAM and 5GB of free space on my windows drive C.
My WinME works very slow. For example, it takes about 10 minutes to delete a single file of 100MB! While on my WinXP that installed on the other drive it takes to delete the same file, less then a second. What can be a couse of this? Can it be the problem that WinME can't handle more then 512MB of RAM? |
Norton installed?

I have only Norton Ghost 9 Installed.
I use this OS mainlly for games and for restoring my main OS (winXP) when needed. My CD drive isn't working very well so I'm using 2nd OS insted of Norton Ghost 9 CD Wizard for the restore process. WRT your query about 512MB - ME requires a tweak in the System.ini file
add the following line in the [vcache] section MaxFileCache=512000 There should NOT be anything else in that section, unless you have more than 1GB installed -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Alex Levi" wrote in message ... I added the line, rebooted but my windows is still working very slow.

Most likely cause is your AV - which is?
Where are you deleting the file from? It's possible that you're forcing System Restore to create a backup of the file prior to deletion, which could take a few seconds Also possible is a slight misconfiguration of the networking settings -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Alex Levi" wrote in message ... I'm tring to delete a stored movie file from an instolled game "movie.dat"
that takes about 150MB from local drive E while my WinME is located on drive C. my system restore is turned off and I don't have any Norton protection software installed on this windows. (I'm tring to delete this file while this game is NOT running). It takes about 10 minutes to delete this file (or any other with this size). I noticed that after the windows deleted this file, I lost space on my drive. I mean, I had to run scandisk to restore lost clusters. I repeated the delete and the problem repeated. what should I do? Are you sure that System Restore is properly disabled?
change your folder options so that you can see Hidden and System files/folders, and look at the properties of the C:\_Restore folder - how big is it? Is the E: partition on the same physical drive as the C: partition? Files with a DAT extension *should* be ignored by the state manager but I
agree this does sound very much as if the state manager is at work and archiving a copy of the deleted file to the system restore archive on C:. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP [2001-2005] Noel Paton wrote: Are you sure that System Restore is properly disabled? change your folder options so that you can see Hidden and System files/folders, and look at the properties of the C:\_Restore folder - how big is it? I'm sure the System Restore is disabled and the size of the folder \_Restore
on every drive C to F is 1KB and there are only one file in each of this folders. I scanned all my drives (C to F) and there are no bad sectors and it's all located on a single Hard Drive. I don't have any Antivirus Software installed on this OS. But I have one on WinXP and I scanned my PC with the latest definition and nothing was found.
