problem changing display resolution

I have a Dell laptop running Windows 98. In the display properties box,
when I can change my resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768. But instead of
repainting the icons smaller and squeezing more onto a fixed expanded
desktop, the icons remain the same size, and the desktop just "expands"
beyond what is viewable at one time. In other words, the whole thing can't
actually be viewed all at one time. To view the entire desktop, one has to
"scroll" the mouse to one side or the other, toward top and bottom to
"survey" the whole desktop. I'd rather all the icons shrink but be able to
see the whole desktop at once, fixed in one place. I've searched around the
display properties window as well as the Device Manager for some switch or
box to uncheck to make this annoying characteristic go away...all to no
avail. The display is given in the Display Manager as a NeoMagic
MagicMedia256AV. Does anyone know how to get my computer to just expand my
resolution on a fixed desktop, without putting it into this crazy mode
wherein the desktop appears to slide around as you move the mouse around the
displayed edges? I'd greatly appreciate the help...

You have posted this message in a lot of groups where it is not relevant.

The setting that controls this feature might be a part of your display
adapter properties (in Device Manager) or it might be a part of BIOS setup
or it might be a separate display utility. It all depends on how your
manufacturer has set up your system. Look for an option such as 'virtual
desktop' - that's the name used for the option that allows the display to be
larger than the physical screen and allows you to scroll that desktop back
and forth across the screen.

It's also possible that your machine has been designed to work like this and
you can't change it. This occurs because the required procedures that would
paint 1024 pixels in a row of 800 physical display positions simply wasn't
provided. Just because the video card can do that resolution doesn't mean
that the video display can handle it properly. Check with the system
manufacturer or the system documentation whether your system is capable of
supporting the display size you have selected.

Pam, you may be stuck, if the maximum "native" resolution of your laptop is
800x600, any increase beyond that size results in the 'scrolling desktop"
AFAIK there is no way around it.
