monitor acting up

Since my recent move, my Samtron monitor has decided to go pink on me every
now and then. Not red, just a deep pink, for no apparent reason. The first
time, I wiggled it a bit. The monitor, that is. It came back. It acted up
again and took more than a wiggle - I had to give it a firm tap. Again,
everything was OK. So now it's gotten to where I have to give it a hard slap
before it settles down. Personally, I don't mind slapping it, but the sound
startles my wife who looks at me kind of funny, afterwards, like it's tube
abuse. What do you think - am I stuck with a dying or masochistic monitor? Is
what I'm doing considered tube abuse? Should I tell my wife to mind her own
business? Why do these things always happen to me? Thanks.

As an old time TV repairman, I used to run into this problem fairly often.
It was generally due to a flaking cathode, causing a small particle to
intermittently short out one of the grids in the electron gun. The problem
could often be solved by placing the display face down and gently tapping on
the CRT neck, thus dislodging the flake into the bell of the tube where it
would do no further harm.

Thanks, bobster. Matter of fact, it did it just as I was posting the first
time, so I just tried the fix - hopefully it'll work. Much appreciated!
