Two questions to answer please.
I don't have the original M\Bd CD and cannot get the onboard sound to go. In
control Panel they are still carry the yellow mark and I have no sound. Have
tried many ways to get a driver to work from the W98 disk and a few others I
have but no luck. It did originally have XP installed and was working.
The other question, why do I have to now press F1 to continue during the
boot up?
It shows the drives memory and cd ok and then stops asking me to press F1 to
resume.
Is that maybe a flat battery on the M\Bd? I think the bios would drop out if
that was the case?
Any help please.

To get sound working correctly you need to install the correct W98 drivers
for your hardware. The correct drivers should be available for download, but
you need to identify the hardware that is installed. You can do this with
several utilities that are available, or by searching using model number,
manufacturer name or other identifying information on the motherboard.

Alternatively, you could disable on-board sound devices and install a
plug-in sound card with its own drivers.

To determine why you are required to press F1 to complete start up you need
to post the rest of the message - that part that appears just before the
instruction to press F1. It could be that the battery is bad, or there
could be some other error that the BIOS is detecting at this time, such as
faulty hardware. If the battery is bad the BIOS usually sets everything to
default values before asking if you want to proceed. If the default is
leaving the sound hardware disabled then that might explain the yellow mark
in Device Manager.

Thanks for that Jeff,
It was in fact the battery that was down well under the 3v, so replaced that
and the F1 nag went away. It did then as you say want to set things to the
default settings, which I allowed it to do.
Have had trouble with onboard sound in the past with another M\Bd and did
what you said and installed a card. May have to do that with this one as
well.

I am actually getting two options at bootup after an overnight 'turnoff'.
The first one is F1 followed by F2.
This doesn't happen after say an hour or two, just after one day to the next
(overnight)
Gives the impression the bios is 'leaking' away. Have fitted a new battery.
Did find a chipset to install the sound drivers but when trying to play the
windows sounds in Control Panel it says windows cannot play them as the
sound card may be in use. The yellow 'tags' have gone in device manager, but
still no sound.
The only options I seem to have are 'Modem sounds' where I think I should
have A 97. option. Is that correct?
I did plug in one of those USB sound devises and of course that works fine.
I wonder if any of this is causing the bios settings to drop out?

Without knowing the descriptions that are attached to the messages about F1
and F2 it's not possible to comment on a reason. Have the messages gone
away now that the battery has been replaced?

If the message is that the sound device is in use this indicates that the
drivers are wrong or corrupted or the device is not functioning. It can
happen when the system tries to play a sound (eg at start-up) but the
process never completes properly, so the device is forever after 'in use'
and nothing else will play, and in some cases even hang up because it can't
get to the sound device. An external device is probably the simplest
solution.
