Ren C:\Program Files\My Documents
 

Hello,

The directory tree in Windows Explorer has been renamed for some reason. I
think a scandisk operation caused it. I have replaced C:\My Documents by
creating a new folder and downloading my files from the server.....creating
a new directory tree for my documents.

I want to rename the ERROR: C:\Program Files\My Documents. The new name will
be C:\Program Files\No Startup. How do I accomplish this? It has been a
while since I had to edit a directory using the commands ren, move, and
deltree.

Deltree is not an option. I don't want to risk it. My DOS Manual tells me
that a directory cannot be moved. I don't want to move it. I'm interested in
DOS REN. Can this be done from the C:\ prompt?

Actually, I'm waiting for my new computer to arrive. Everything is on the
server waiting for download. Windows 98SE has a serious memory deficiency.
It can no longer handle the new software, and my monitor has dimmed.
Internet Marketing and Ftp upload will deplete memory very quickly. This can
be risky when I'm updating my web site.

AFAIK, you can't rename a directory in DOS. You can only create/delete
directories (MD, DEL & DELTREE commands). Why can't you do it in Windows
Explorer?

Honestly, your intent is lost on me. Does the directory contain anything? If
so, why not move all the contents to the "new" My Documents folder and get
rid of the error folder?

Have you lost any actual files that you wish to retrieve? If so, then you
should stop what you're doing right now and focus on data retrieval. The
more you use the disk, the less likely you'll be able to retrieve data
intact.

I'm having to point some of my applications in the direction of the new
C:\My Documents folder.

I wasn't thinking clearly. Windows 98se is getting hard to live with. I
haven't lost any files or databases, I'm storing them on the server until my
new computer arrive. The 700,000,000 byte download was successful. In fact,
I did rename the misplaced directory in Windows Explorer. The My Documents
Icon went back home after I redirected only one of the short cuts......My
Documents on the startup menu.

Hopefully, the migration to Windows Vista will be trouble free.

What do you believe will be achieved by renaming it?

If you are determined to make the change, the procedure is to select it in
an Explorer window (C:\Program Files in your example) press F2 and type in
the new name. Or you can choose the File / Rename menu option.

You can then change it back the same way.

entirely online or in local stores, and my pile of unopened magazines and
catalogues simply becomes a recycling chore.
