registry mechanic/crap cleaner goof

I used Registry Mechanic and then Crap Cleaner, and
now everything on my desktop boots up O.K., except
that it looks like safe mode. But it's not in safe mode.
That is, everything is displayed much larger than usual.
And the sound doesn't work. I guess I messed up the
registry...

I don't know about Registry Mechanic, but CCleaner has an undo if you
saved the registry changes. Just right click on the saved items you
removed and choose "merge".

In which case:
a) Run any undo files you made when running these tools,
if that fails,
b) Use system restore and roll you system back to a checkpoint created
before using those tools,
and if system restore is broken,
c) Click, Start, Run and enter in the box
SCANREG /RESTORE
choose a date immediately prior to running those tools and on completion
reboot your system.

Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

Registry Mechanic had a restore function. I tried that to no avail.
I looked but didn't see the CCleaner option. Too late, I already
uninstalled it.

I tried this and got pretty good results, except the reinstall
couldn't find 4 .dll's, a .bin, a .drv and a .vxd.

Like I said, you need to have backed up what you removed and, if you
want to restore it, you need to go to the back ups and right click on
them and choose merge. That said, I have used CCleaner on many machines
with no adverse affects so I suspect your problem did not originate from
CCleaner. I have heard of adverse affects from using Registry Mechanic
so I suspect that's where the problem originated.

I'm pleased to read you've now managed to fix your problems.

(I uninstalled Registry Mechanic, too.)

Thanks for the feedback.

Good!

You may still find that you have problems with the drivers (judging by the
results you got doing the reinstall I proposed) - in which case you will
need to go to the manufacturer's website, and download a new set of drivers
from there, and install them

What happened when you used System Restore??
Exact details please!
